not necessarily
what is more likely is that while he was in the army, his regular physical exercise stimulated bone rebuilding (due to microfractures that are normal) in his long bones (ie: thighs).
being overweight helps strengthen your bones by making them work harder to support you but does not stop this normal bone rebuilding.

You can, depending on how old you are and what you're eating. Certain steroids and growth hormones can also do this artificially. If you're still growing before the particular age that your body's growth hormone drastically reduces, you may produce more of this hormone when you stop eating because your body is trying to metabolize more proteins and sugars stored within your fat cells or liver to provide the nutrients that you are lacking from not eating while you're also still being programed to grow through DNA to a certain age through a built in biological function of time. Because of the excess growth hormone, on top of just releasing these fats and sugars, the excess amount may signal you other cells, like bone and muscle cells to replicate faster than normal, causing you to become taller.

If this were true my heigth would be going up and down constantly
Seriously think about your question. Look at Alie Kristy on TV, she lost 75 pounds. And she hasn't grown an inch.
Really really think about this.
Do you think if your friend gains the weight back do you think he will get shorter?
Your friend is probably a teenage boy who tend to slim down and grow taller.
NO it is not possible to lose weight which would make you grow taller. if so the world would be a very strange place.

some people gain 2 inches although this is rare....if he was weight training, the muscles become elongated and leaner which could make his build appear larger.
in any case, weight loss makes the body look leaner and smaller, so it is as if the person lost their "stubbiness" and gained a few inches..
pilates also claims to add height, but really the results are negligible..
posture improves through exercise & strength training, so this is another thing to wonder about....

Its possible to go through a spurt of height when you have lost allot of weight.Just as our feet grow and shrink when less and more weight are added to them,Perhaps your friend improved his nutrition which was interfering with growth,or maybe its just a coincidence any way you look at it,that is fantastic!

It's not the weight loss itself it's the better posture that comes with not being weighed down. It's true people do gain height that way.
