After asking my last question about my sister being diagnosed with bipolar and depression, does that mean I will have it if it is heriditary? I am not depressed but I am one of 3 siblings and the only one with out this diagnosis. My mother has it as well. The only thing I have a hard time with is the animosity that carries around these 3 it tests my patience. Makes me feel crazy and I was recently checked out..as a joke the therapist said if anything I was hyperchondriac..I did not find that funny until later but I know she was joking. I just want to make sure it is not gonna sneak up on me in a few years or if there is something you think I can do to prevent it from happening?

Well, you may have inherited a susceptibility (that much is known), but no-one knows the factors that cause the disorder to manifest itself. You may be lucky, you may not.

In terms of known risks, if you can, avoid stressful situations and try to maintain sleep hygiene (regular hours) and try to maintain routines where you can. Beyond that, I have no suggestions, I'm afraid.

I would say that it is a possibility and you should be carefull, it has been researched pretty long. I have read about depression disorders for some time now and it is almost always occuring after an incident that negetivily affects you. People think it is hereditery but it is most likely you all feel the same pain because you know the person. There are many different types but i think the worst possible is the kind where you turn psycho and throw things all over the place, tell her to take some medication prescribed by a doctor and hopefully she will get over it :) best of luck to your sister and I hope she feels better. SHE NEEDS TO GET TREATMENT RIGHT AWAY IT CAN LEAD TO "-SUICIDE-"

i was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. they called it manic depressive illness back then. at the time i was put on lithium carbonate and today i am on depakote. i feel much better on depakote. i have all of my emotions back and i just feel terrific.

i inherited this illness from my mother's side of the family. she also has the illness. i have read that one out of three of the children will get the illness. i cannot tell the future so i cannot answer your question about bi-polar disorder sneaking up on you. enjoy each day as it comes. also, i must tell you i believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. i honestly believe He takes care of me every day. i am a happy person and i feel very secure. see Romans chapter 10 in the New Testament. there is nothing i know that prevents this illness. if you do get it, make sure you have a very good psychiatrist - maybe one who specializes in this illness.

I realize that a chemical imbalance can be hereditary but if you don't feel depressed and then happy and then depressed again, I think you'll be fine. If you're really worried about it, I'd suggest going to talk to your doctor about it and just ask him questions about it. Doctors will be able to help you out with things like that. And getting advice from a doctor about physical and mental health always makes me feel better, so maybe it'll help you out too.

Hypochondria is a pretty common thing these days, especially those with anxiety. I know I'm a hypochondriac because everytime my symptoms act up I always think its something worse.

It doesn't mean that you have it. My aunt, brother and daughter have it and so does one of my sons but neither of the other rwo boys have it nor do I. I think it hits and misses in genes and I can understand the animosity it carries. I actually had to get on an anti-anxiety drug (Lexapro) to deal with my family members, specifically my daughter. She was driving me nuts.

My family is the same way...and I am the one who does not have any major emotional "problems". To my knowledge creating a strong support system will help remove large amounts of stress and will help you catch this if it will. You should be very cautious but luckily you will not see any of these problems...to "prevent" this make that support system.
