What possible reason do people have for telling their children that Santa exists? My parents told me, but I never believed, and I actually was pretty pissed that they were lying to me.
I understand that this makes Christmas more "magical" for the kinds and for the whole family, really. But, how can you not feel like a hypocrite when your kid finds out you're lying?

I just don't see the point, help me out! :)

We have 2 children & they have known from day 1 Santa is not real. They also know that many of their preschool friends believe 100% & they will get in big trouble if they ruin their "fun". My husband and I find Santa a bit creapy he comes in your home when you are sleeping & knows what you do...and then after all this you tell your kids...hey Ive been lying to you! So we choses the unpopular route. Instead of leaving cookies for Santa we spend Christmas Eve baking Jesus a Birthday Cake that we have after diner Christmas Day. My daughter (4) this year asked to get her photo taken w/ Santa which was fine w/ us. But she has never said anything to the effect she wishes she believed there was a Santa rather we focus our holidays on Christs birth.

For you to get pissed says alot about you- you sound like a self centered brat! Instead of being pissed why not try and be grateful for your parents trying to give you something magical and fun to look forward to at Christmas?

It has never crossed my mind that I was lied to about Santa- it was just something that I believed in until I didn't. Nothing sinister going on- You sound bitter- if you don't see the point then don't tell your kids that there is a Santa.

Well I am a mother of 3 ( 9, 6, & 4). i tell them that santa is real up until they stop believing. but when my oldest told me that i know your santa. i had to laugh, but at the same time i felt it was a sign she is getting older, but she did ask me why i've always told her about santa. you know all i could really honestly tell her from my heart is so that she has an imagination that only her little mind can understand. i dont think i would call myself a hypocrite but i can call my self an open minded parent.

Do you tell little kids about sex, death, disease, war? They're only young once, you want to protect them as long as you can. Soon enough they know there's no Santa, but would you take their enjoyment of the classic Christmas movies, the silly little traditions, all the good stuff because "it's lying?" My feelings, anyway Merry Christmas.

Not all parents teach that Santa is a magical being, they call the goodness in the world Santa.

As far as I'm concerned I'm not lying. The spirit of Santa lives in all of us. In our children, in adults, in everyone. As far as St. Nicholas it is the truth. There are different variations and depictions of "Santa" all over the world. I think it's fun to learn with kids about all the different kinds.

Let kids have a little imagination and fun while they can!

you know this help kids believe in magic and have a childhood be Innocent and have that little ting that make kids special and different from us, they believe there is more that what you see or touch and they grow up like kids, believing that magic is real and things can happen, not knowing the bad and mean that exist in the world.

Parents like to base their relationship with their children on lies. I guess lying gets easier as long as you practice first. People do all they can to avoid honesty, especially with their own children. But not to fear because their children in turn lie about drugs, alcohol and sex later so they definately get even.
