Nine can be misunderstood, therefore instead of saying NINE, they/we say NINER. Each letter of the alphebet also has a full word to represent it. Such as A=Alpha, B=Bravo and so forth.
Good luck. Pops

because when your talking on the radio, niner is easier to hear as the number 9 than the actual word. Ok lets say your on the radio to someone and you say the word nine.....and the person on the other end doesn't hear nine.....but thinks you said Mine or something that rhymes with 9.....get it???? I was in the military and I understand it but if you have never been in I guess it may be hard to understand....The number system is different and the Military time is different too...but there are reason's why and may be hard for a civilian to understand......I may have just confused you more but I gave it my best shot!!!

Most of the military terms are said that way in order to prevent any possible miscommunication. If you said nine, and the other person hears something else, all sorts of things could go wrong. So niner is easy to identify as the number nine.

It has to do with radio communications. With all the different accents and radio static, the military specifies how each number is to be pronounced. Since 9 may sound like 5, it is niner and fife.

I think people use "niner" on radios because "nine" and "five" sound too similar.
