My dad was a heavy smoker. I tried smoking in 8th grade--it did NOTHING for me. So there was nothing to be tempted by. That fact has always made me wonder if there is a genetic tendency to like it...or not like it.
My husband, on the other hand, started smoking by the time he was 13. (His mother was a smoker). When he was 36, he was in an accident. He had to quit smoking temporarily to have surgery. And when it was all over with, he realized he had not smoked for three weeks due to the hospitalization, so he asked himself "Why start??" And he didn't.
Bottom line: I think that smoking has a social push, and is furthered by liking it, and is furthered by the addiction that it becomes. But the consequences are SO high.......not worth it. I'll stick with my chocolate addiction.

It was an invitation. I started smoking at 14, When I was 66 sitting in the back yard smoking a still small voice said to me " that is the last cigarette you are to smoke" I looked in the pack, there were 3 left. Wonder of wonders, I considered that and said "OK" Those 3 lasted as long as I could drag them out that day.. I havn"t had one since. That was 4 years ago. Never a withdrawal symptom ,In fact I do not even smell second hand smoke.

I smoked for a short time as a teen. Why did I quit? Found it pointless.
My kids are cured of the idea of ever smoking because their grandma had a full lung replacement two years ago- due to smoking from age 14 to 50.

When I was 14 I had a gym teacher I really hated. I wasn't even thinking about smoking until he told us not to do it. I immediately started. I showed him! I smoked for years and it really sucked. It's a nasty habit. I quit many, many more times than I can count. One time it worked. After two weeks I never wanted a cigarette again. That was over thirty years ago. I no more want to smoke a cigarette than to put one in my ear.

I smoked for almost thirty years. If I was drinking I would smoke 3-4 packs a day. Then I became a Christian, God delivered me six years ago and I haven't smoked since or drank.

I don't smoke. The reason.... When I actually tried it in high school, the smoke burned my throat. It wasn't a pleasant exprience. I know the risks, i tried it and didn't find it soothing. Why continue?
