Go to some auction in the snow, and wait until it's almost over.

Rent a center
Cort Furniture Rental
Craigslist
Try estate sales
Garage sales are also a good way to get furniture
Do you have a car, or a vehicle big enough to transport furniture?
Walter E Smithe is probably too expensive
Wickes might be a better alternative
Value City Furniture might be another choice for you.

Go to the IKEA furniture store.
They have ultra modern furniture and lighting for a college student's budget.
I'm SURE Chicago has one. Look in the phone book under furniture.
It's a huge chain that's sweeping the country.
You can furnish your whole apt. for just a few dollars!

Well not quite sure what your looking to spend, but i just recently moved into my 1st apartment also, and had 900 dollars to spend, i went to ikea, not to sure if you have one around that area...well with those 900 dollars i got my self a coffee table, a sofa, chair and ottoman. and still had around 180 to spend. but b4 i went to ikea i did alot of looking on line. and found grate things in walmart and target, the bad thing was the shipping and handling 100 to 300 dollars just to ship. either way i would say your best bet would be to browse on line pick out a few things you are interested in and call to see if they actually have them in stock, but if you need something quick and cheap i really do recommend ikea....

Goodwill is a good place to start, but also there are usually places like Christian ministries who have cheap furniture. Good luck and enjoy the apt.

there is a lot of great furniture at second hand stores and the owners are usually ready to negotiate a good price.

check out Ikea. They have really modern designs, and it is affordable. It is not exactly furniture you would keep in the family for generations and generations, but it is cool.

Sign up for Freecycle.org.
It takes a bit to navigate through the site to get signed up--but it is so worth it.
After you are signed up you get emails when people are giving away stuff (it is all free). You can also post a "wanted" on the site and people will email you if they have it.(yes, free again)
Totally awesome site and there are Freecycle groups nationwide.
