I work at a crappy job where I sit for a long time. I sit with co-workers that I value as friends but I also want to text message my other friends while on shift. Is this inpolite?

I guess you have to ask yourself what if your co-workers do that?

Well, it really wouldn't be that much different than if the person were sitting the room with you. There would be a three person conversation happening. Now if you completely ignore your co-worker, then that's inpolite. But then again, it's not mandatory that you socialize with your co-workers, is it?

IMO, cellular telephones and etiquette do exactly not blend; I even have hardly, if ever, witnessed absolutely everyone applying a cellular telephone to apply any style of etiquette; extremely the choice. people communicate too loud, they use them consistently, even taking them into bathing room stalls and while they force applying them, they're too slow or force very unevenly. And till there's a stable reason to have it on, close it off in a eating place. basically undeniable rude and obnoxious and performed extra for result and out of ego than the rest.

in general using your cell phone for personal business is bad manners. while it is polite of you not to talk and to text instead you should maybe consider doing this while nobody is talking to you or while you are on breaks. in general do unto others -- if you were trying to talk to someone at work and you felt it was important and the person just sat there texting you wouldn't like it much would you?

If you're sitting with your coworkers and you're having a conversation with them, it is impolite to key in texts on your phone. If one of them becomes preoccupied, it wouldn't be a big deal to text real quick, I imagine.

Do those two things even go together? Manners were not even considered when the cell phone was invented.

I do not own one, hopefully never will. It's like having 15 idiots strapped to your waist.

It is if you are in the middle of a conversation. It shows a lack of respect for what the other person is saying. Wait until you have your break or there is a lull in conversation.

pretty much if no one is talking to you and theres no customers then text away, but when theres an actual person talking with you, its pretty rude to not give them your attention.
