If you want to go into law enforcement...just go to the academy and join. The Marines won't get you any closer to law enforcement...when you get out you will still have to climb the civilian law enforcement ladder, time in the military doesn't usually matter for most civilian departments.

Maybe this answer will help you decide. My son whom is still in high school wanted to join the airforce. I had no objections since he was looking out for his own future which is a good thing. Now, what you have to consider is...are you doing well in school or are you still in school? If so make sure your grades are A's and B's the Marines ask for a few Good Men remember? but so does the airforce and Navy too. Also you can consider whether to remain at home and get a college degree or you can get a degree while in the Marines. It's a good career. And no I'm not a recruiter I was just married to a military man...lol..remember that the marines are tough and the weak don't make it.Talk to your friends and family about what you want to do maybe they will have some insight on the issue. Don't rush into a decision overnight because this is a big step into your furture.Take the test to find out if you qualify on being an MP for the military there is no obligation, the test will show where your MOS would be.Good luck!

first off START RUNNING (i.e. excercise) & getting into shape. If your the type of person who wants to go to war, right now is a good time to join. Yes, it will help out your future career as a Deputy Sheriff. It depends if you enter M.P. (Military Police) when you join the Marine Corps. Also, you get good long term benefits & more money for continued education when you get out. You don't have to pay taxes, you can shop at the Commissary, the Exchange & get so many discounts. You even get discounts with housing, travel, etc. It also gives you a chance to travel the world & be in different countries. Hawaii is one of them!

Becoming a Marine is a tough decision. Don't listen to those haters in here talkin' about "join the Navy, Army or the Airforce instead!"....you'll learn that Marine Corps is hard core & the most respected out of all in the Military Services.

GOOD LUCK

Listen to me, don't talk to a recruiter until you are almost sure you are going to join. Not all recruiters are created equal, and some will do nearly anything to get a recruit. Make some friends and ask people about their jobs and how they like it, what's required to do it, join some Marine forums, do ALOT of research. Ask ALOT of questions. I think you can talk to an online recruiter at the Marine web site whom are not obligated to recruit you, just answer your questions. You are going to want to know how exactly everything is going to go once you join and what to expect so you don't regret making the decision if something happens you didn't expect nor want. Police departments aren't exactly desperate for Sheriff's so having Military service on your record will definitely help. If you do Military police work, that's even better. Once your out and do the Police Academy you'll pretty much be guaranteed a spot. Good luck man.

First of all, ignore the don't join,Anti war people.

As all of the experienced people here are telling you, recruiters are liars.Talk to people who have been in and people who are in.THEN talk to a recruiter.

Marines are the best. They might brainwash you compared to other branches, but it's also the branch held in the highest esteem out of the five.Think about it.Marines are an all in one force....America doesn't need a Marine Corps,it wants one.

You'll still have to work your way from the bottom in civilian law enforcement, but 4 years as a Marine MP will help you in other areas.I think it's a good idea if you feel this is what you want to do.

And mentally prepare for this-It's not IF you go to Iraq...It's WHEN you'll be here.

Feel free to message me if ya got more questions bro.

aim high! go air force instead. I am a veteran of the army and air force. You can get free training in a career of your choice, so when you get out you have experience that is hard to come by in the civilian world.
If you want to be a deputy sheriff, you should pick a law enforcement job. Don't let the recruiter talk you into something else. However, if you decide to join up, you might end up in the sandbox(middle east) especially in law enforcement, but you get free police academy training and valueable job experience.
It's your choice, whatever you do, weigh all options carefully, and do some research, so you know what you are getting yourself into.
Good luck!

The military profession is a very honorable and respected one. Do your research and determine field will best suit you. I'd recommend a military police role to prepare you more for civil law enforcement. Unfortunately the Marine Corps does not have this field available (they use the Navy for this function). It's not to say that you couldn't do well by having another type of role and going into law enforcement after your service. But if that is your passion, I'd recommend getting some related experience. The Army's Military Police branch is getting some really good experience right now.

You should join the reserves as an MP and also get on with the Sheriff dept, if you end up deploying most of the time law enforcement jobs will continue paying you while deployed... You'll get military training and the title of US Marine, you can't loose.

I would talk to the people you trust the most and contact a recruiter for the sheriff's office and ask him.

While I have never considered a military career, I give you my up most respect for even considering a career in the marines.

Forget the Marines...join the Navy or the Air force....better schooling and better jobs that don't require you to eat mud in some country as you crawl around on your belly..the Navy and the Air force don't brain wash you as much either...

Sorry you Simper Fi guys you do a good job but I'm just not that macho myself...
