Long, long ago we used to slaughter steers & hogs for market. Single head shot with a .22 Long Rifle worked everytime. I know you said, "Without a head shot."
Then that would be a desert jackrabbit, actually, many desert jackrabbits. The biggest one was as large as a small dog. It was a shoulder shot and it just went down. Also, many, many Western Diamondback rattlesnakes in the five to six foot range. Hit about an inch and a half below the head. Today the only reason I own a .22 rifle is for plinking and rattlers.

.22 rimfires will kill a deer, opposite to what others will inform you, even with the undeniable fact that it takes a head or neck shot, and an actual one at that. With that out of ways, given the alternative, i could use some thing extra helpful. it somewhat is criminal to seek deer with .22 rimfires the place I stay, I merely desire extra ability, and that i would not advise employing one in case you have get admission to to a extra helpful around. If it somewhat is unlawful the place you reside to apply a .22 rf or centerfire on vast sport, then do no longer use them. it somewhat is entirely in all fairness to kill a deer with a .22 centerfire, counting on the variety, bullet shape, velocity, etc. Varmint form bullets will amplify too with out postpone to make certain deep adequate penetration into the vitals, and distinctive the time the animal will run off. you're able to theoretically lose a deer shot with a .375 H&H if the shot placement is undesirable. i've got killed distinctive deer with the .220 speedy and .22-250, all one shot kills, employing extra durable bullets, such by using fact the Nosler Partition, and none have taken extra beneficial than 2 steps in the previous hitting the floor. you're speaking 3500fps+, and bullets weighing fifty 5 grains or extra, as much as 70. i understand i'm a ethical hunter, and could no longer say sorry for employing .22 centerfires. i've got used my extra helpful rifles on deer, yet employing a smaller high quality potential you have have been given to get a sprint closer and decide your bullet placement extra heavily. i'm no longer announcing it somewhat is for each individual, yet you could no longer decide what you haven't any longer tried.

~100 pound German Shepherd that attacked a disabled neighbor. It was facing me when I put a .22 rimfire Winchester hollow point in the dog's heart from 25 yards. It ran and expired 25 yards later.
I have read of people shooting black bears in the head with a 22 rimfire. Not something I would want to try! :-O

I once shot a wild hog that weighed about 100 lbs right behind the ear and dropped him in his tracks, he was standing still broadside at about 30 yards.

biggest for me is a coon. my brother shot a deer a long time ago and dropped it. hollowpoints work better. as far as head shots go, that's what we use when we kill hogs to butcher after we get them from the traps.
