We just got a new Pitbull puppy and my brother told me we shouldn't let her lick us. I have never heard of this before. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

No disrespect intended, but you're brother isn't too bright. Enjoy your puppy, and remember that licking is a way that dogs increase their bond with you. It is pack behavior, and he is becoming a member of your pack. I wish you all the best with the new pup!

Oh, I have a Pit also, she is a fantastic, loyal, love able, and smart dog, as I am sure yours will be, with love and nurturing.

Uh... no. Letting any dog lick you is fine, unless you find it disgusting, which is when you should train her to show another form of affection. Pit-bulls are just a type of dog (short hair, medium build, stocky) and can describe anything from a purebred American Pit Bull Terrier, to an American Staffordshire Terrier, to a lab mix, and despite what your brother and other ignorant individuals may think, they are not aggressive (in fact their ancestors were bred specifically to NOT be human-aggressive, and to be as obedient as possible). I'm sure your brother thinks that licking you will encourage her to bite, however nothing can be further from the truth, she may nibble on your ear (which is puppy-language for "lets play!!"), but licking is a sign of affection and submission. A dog is a dog, no matter what breed or shape, all can be great, loving pets given the right environment. Congrats on the puppy!

Dogs actually have very clean mouths compared to humans'. But worms are a possibility, if your dog has worms.
You shouldn't let puppies lick you because they grow up into dogs with enormous wet tongues. It's nothing special to pitbulls, just any dog with a big mouth.
When he starts to lick you, just stand up and go do something else out of his reach. As soon as he licks you (or does anything else you don't like, like jumping up or biting your hand by accident) playtime is over. Tell him "no," so he knows exactly when he does something wrong. You don't have to yell. Eventually, he'll figure out that licking you makes you stop paying attention to him, and he'll stop doing it.
Everyone loves a dog with good manners.

I've never heard of it. I don't let my dogs lick my mouth because they do sometimes have stuff in their mouth I don't really want in mine!

But I do let them lick all over my face and neck if they want. Hands, arms, and legs make 'em happy too. :) Dogs lick as a submissive greeting behavior, normal pack interaction, and I do believe it helps them bond to you as their alpha.

If you're worried about her learning to bite, you can inhibit her biting behavior by making a loud, sharp noise and turning away from her when she uses her teeth on you. Being a pitbull, she wants your attention and affection more than anything, and will learn not to put her teeth on you pretty quickly if you take that away from her when she mouths you. But I don't think there's anything wrong at all with the licking.

Good luck with her!

That's not true. first of all, a dog's mouth is way more cleaner than a human tongue. they have germ killers on their tongue so they can lick lots of stuff without getting sick.
You SHOULD let a puppy lick you. It lets them get used to you. I have a bunch of dogs and they all grow up nice because we let them get used to us and other dogs.
Important, while feeding a puppy, make sure do touch the food while they're eating so that when they're grown up they won't be protective of their food.
Pit Bulls are misunderstood pets. Many of them think that pit bulls are killers. No. Pets reflect their owners. How they have been raised. But pit bulls can be good guard dogs because of their guarding instincts! So still be careful when you raise one!

Don't worry about what he says, if you want to, let your pup lick you! After all, dogs' mouths are cleaner than a human's!

my pit bull is 3 yrs old and i've had since was 5 weeks old and she she's licked me at least 100 times a day every day since i got her. i'm fine and she's fine. one reason this breed is so feared is because of simple ignorance of the breed and myths.

Your brother is right. He is still a puppy and his immune system is still weak and you might transmit germs to him. You should only allow him to lick you after he have had his first 3 vaccination.
