I have been pulled into this situation with my cousin and his ex, and my ex bf who is now dating my cousins ex. My cousin and my ex were really good friends.
My cousin had told him it was fine, but it never really is. I always find it is an unwritten rule to not date your friends exes no matter how much you like them.
I don't think either of you are in the right because he should never have told you it was fine when clearly it wasn't, or he wouldn't want to be going back out with her, but I don't think you're in the right for going for his ex girlfriend either. Personally I believe this situation could screw up your friendship.

Neither of you, he should have known better, and so should you, Never date friends Ex's cause it never turns out good, just messes up the friendship.

you are dumb for thinking it was ok in the first place..no matter what your buddy said he was LYING to you because you are friends and tehy didnt want to seem attached to the other person. trust me you are dumb for getting in the middle because now you might lose a gf and a friend.

No one can answer a question regarding your relationship for you, they aren't as simple as that. You're asking the wrong people anyway, you should be talking to her. Its not about whom has the better claim to her, but whom she desires to be with.
