A lot of people obsess about only buying the best dog food. I often wonder what you feed your human kids? Do you fill them up with junk food or only seek the best food for them? What about smoking around your animals and your children? That is the worst kind of poison for your kids and for your pets. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how bad that is. Sometimes I think we have our priorities out of whack.

You are so right on that. My Chi's eat Royal Canin. My children are grown and out of the house. When they were young I fed them healthy food. Almost no junk. My grandkids! Don't even want to know what they eat. Here they eat well, for all you young moms out there, my grankids would rather eat here then anywhere else. Kids love healthy home made meals.

I have a Bichon Frise, and he was sensitive to some foods and picky. We feed him Nutro Natural Choice. We started with Small Breed Formula, but we got a sample of Lamb and Rice and he loves it! He now eats Lamb and Rice for Puppy everyday. He just got fixed so I mix a little canned food in but that is stopping now that he is better. This brand has Meat as the first ingredient and no corn or other carbs that are hard to digest, they use whole rice and oatmeal. It comes in a tone of different varieties and the vet and trainer say it is a good food. You can buy it at Petsmart, Petco and Rural King!

There is no such thing as best food..there are better quality foods but it doesn't necessarily mean that the highest priced food is the best and what I consider best for my boys may not be best for your fur-kids. But it is always good to read labels, watch for allergies, and count calories. By any vet's standard table scrapes would not be defined as best nor good food to feed your dog. Table scraps/human food is just that human food..not made and targeted for the nutrients needed by a dog nor does it do anything for their teeth. Table scraps are like feeding a human child big macs and than not having the benefit of the dry kibble rubbing on their teeth is like letting your kid eat big macs and not brushing or flossing. I chose Innova Evo dry for my dogs after trying about 5-7 different brands that I found acceptable based on other dog owner's recommendation and nutrientional information. It got narrowed down by which one my dogs liked best and additionally I got the added benefit that it made my dogs' coats very soft. Yes, my dogs get treats but in moderation. I don't have kids but if I did I would do about the same type of trial test and label reading for them as I would my dogs. Treats for humans or dogs are both okay if done in moderation. NO, I do not smoke nor would I knowingly allow people to smoke in my house or near my dogs if I can control it, just as I would with kids. And no I would not beat my dogs or kids either.

Yes, I feed my dogs the very best food I can (note that "best" does not necessarily mean "most expensive").

Thing is, as I learned more over the years about taking good care of my dogs and feeding them well, I did indeed start realizing that I took greater care of their diet than I did my own. Since their diet was controlled by me, it became very obvious when something was going on that was diet related -- not always as obvious in our own less-controlled human diets. So then I made dramatic changes to my own diet. I live a much healthier life now, thanks to the care I took of my dogs.

Personally, I feel that the best canine diet is raw meat. However, there are certainly other kibble alternatives out there to garbage like Beneful. I'd rather feed my dog out of my neighbors' trash cans. You don't have to feed the best of the best, but we are what we eat. There are no guarantees in life, but good food is an investment toward the best chance at a long and healthy life.

I don't have any children of my own...but if I am feeding my nieces and nephews, I try to give them the best food I can. My personal diet may not be the best...I know I drink way too much soda. However, I am able to choose what I eat. My dogs are not able to decide for themselves what they get for dinner, so it is my duty to make sure they get the best food. That is part of the responsibility of owning pets.

Look up "the truth about pet food" or "what's really in pet food."

I don't have kids, but i do my best to keep unhealthy foods out of my system. I rarely eat fast food and try to eat at home as often as possible.

If you ever want to know just how bad corn is, look up how it effects the amazing cow. PBS had a wonderful special on cows and about 10 - 15 minutes covered the horrid effect corn had on cows (who can healthyfully digest just about anything else.)

Since i can't afford to feed my dogs raw i buy them the best that i can. I feel that is Wysong. They don't cook their products unlike other companies. I've tried their human products too and swear by them.

Yes, my dogs only get the best food (home-made raw food), but so will my human children, when I have them, obviously not the raw food, but a good, balanced diet. My hubby smokes outside only, not around any pets. When I become pregnant, he has three months to quit entirely, but no, smoking is not the worst kind of poison, I'm pretty sure acid, pesticides, artificial hormones, rat poison, can be much worse... anyway, are you insinuating that we should not feed our pets well?

For dogs, I think people like me watch for quality like we do because of what is allowed in commercial dog foods. They don't have the same standards for what is in their food that the FDA does, but some companies have learned that people want to feed their dogs safe food that is healthy for them and will pay a bit more for that.
I agree that a kid if they are fed McDonalds or corndogs for every meal that they will be neglected just like a dog is when it is fed a diet of Ol' Roy.
Maybe what you are overlooking is that probably the vast majority of people that care about what their dogs eat also care about what they eat and what their kids eat. Nothing wrong with that.

I feed my dog Innova Evo because I feel it's one of the best foods out there. I don't have or want kids. My husband and I are vegetarians. We don't smoke and eat fairly healthy. I can't imagine anyone who is intelligent enough to thoroughly research their dog's food, would fill their children up with junk.

On that note, it seems odd to me that some of the people claiming they feed their dogs high quality food are mentioning IAM's, Alpo, Pedigree, and Purina. Are you serious?!!

Well my kids are 16 and 12 - the 16yo is pretty much her own decision maker when it comes to food - being a Jr. in high school she sets her own schedule for volunteering and being involved in Dance and Track. Both kids know what is healthy but they do enjoy the junk.

I guess I figure my city dogs can't fend for themselves, so it's up to me to get them the right food to keep them healthy and fit.

(Incidently my son is a purple belt and my daughter is an orange belt in karate).

I do not drink, smoke or do drugs. I figure I need to lead by example,so if I'm going to ask them not to do something I shouldn't do it either.
