Washington has always been the District of Colombia

Virginia and Maryland were each asked to give up a piece of land for the new Capitol. It was neither Virginia nor was it Maryland, yet it had once belonged to each.

So it became a new District, and they called it the District of Colombia. "Colombia" was the poetic name used for the United States of America at the time.

George Washington chose the site himself, but refused to ever call it anything but "The Federal City"

Washington is the name of the city named for the first president. The district of columbia is the land granted by naboring states to the federial government so that a capital city could be built, ie; Washinton DC or to be a little more procise, Washinton, District of Columbia. Don't they teach history in school any more?
