You are not wrong for not wanting the dog with health problems. That is your choice to make. I can completely understand where you are coming from in reference to what has happened to your family in this past year. Some people don't mind taking on dogs that have health problems but if you choose not to, you certainly should not feel bad about it at all. Getting a dog is a lifetime committment and you want to find one that matches your needs as well so that it will be a happy relationship for life for both of you! :-)

I can't say it's wrong or right but I would like you to consider that a health problem could be serious or minor. I could see how adopting a dog with a knowingly short life span may affect your family but did you even ask how serious the health problems were with the dogs before blanketedly saying no?? A health problem could be something as simple as a shot a day or some eyedrops or tragically it could be cancer. With some medications (which some may be as low as $20 a month) a dog can have a seemingly normal life and lifespan.
Secondly, have you considered the values you could be teaching your children by taking on a dog with some medical problem? What would you want them to learn and keep in mind these are the people who will hopefully take care of you in your later years?!?

No your not wrong for not wanting the dog. You would be doing a great thing helping it but you have to think about yourself and your family as well and what is best for you all too. If you feel better waiting and getting a healthy dog then you should do that instead. Just think of it this way, even if you wait to get a healthy dog you'll still be giving a dog a chance to have a great life that it might not have otherwise.

I can understand youre point, but grief is something that takes time to get over. i know that the dog has health problems and I don't know what kind, but the dog even if it dies in a while may just what youre children need at this time. Maybe the lord sent the dog to you all for a reason. this could also help youre children to understand living and dieing a little better. I know this is a hard desicion, but I think if it were me I would go and get the dog. Who knows maybe the children will love it so much that its health problems will get better. Good Luckand I am sorry for youre lose.

You have to think about what is best for you and your kids. But you would be doing a good thing for the dog. However you also have to consider the expense you are taking on with a sick dog. If you can afford it I would talk it over with the kids and consider taking the sick dog. Explain the good deed you would be doing taking in a sick dog with no home. I don't think that the SPCA would give you a dog so sick that it is near death.

You're not wrong. You're the only one who knows what you're able to deal with emotionally right now.
Ask about the health problems though. They may just mean the dog has a mild condition which is completely treatable with inexpensive medication. It might be good for your kids to feel they are helping take care of a sick pet, and to see their responsibility keeping the dog happy and healthy, so that they know that illness isn't always scary. Losing a family member can be very frightening and make children feel helpless and confused.
Good luck to you, and I'm sorry for your loss.

No you are not wrong at all. You should only take on an animal that you can emotionally, physically, and financially care for. There are people out there (luckily) that want to take on animals like this to help give them a better rest of their lives but there is nothing wrong at all with not wanting to put your family through that again. Hopefully you find a nice, healthy dog soon. Good luck!

Some would say you are wrong and getting a dog from a pet store or breeder only perpetuates the puppy mill world. I would not think poorly of you for not wanting a sick pet. You want a family member. A happy healthy family member. It would be wrong to blame you for that. I recently bought a puppy from a pet store. He is happy healthy and very much a member of our family and 1 less pup that will end up being rescued by animal rescue groups. Kinda a proactive approach if you ask me.

I do not blame you for stalling. You should check elsewhere to find a healthy dog. You do not want to jump into getting a dog that is either sick or has emotional problems. You and your kids will find the perfect dog in due time. "good things come to those who wait" Let the kids have fun hunting for the one that best fits in your family.
Happy Hunting

No you are not wrong.......Some people have the money and the time for a sick puppy. You have children to think about, and you don't want to break their hearts...Check at your local vets, they have bulletin boards full of dogs needing owners....Good luck
