Plenty of religions have advocated this throughout history.

I suspect a lot less people would walk the walk, then who talk the talk around here.

Let me re-word your question.

If god considered me killing your parents, your children, torting all your freinds and burning down your house the ultimate proof of love and obedience, instead of a mortal sin, do you think I should do it?

Is that how you define religion?

I've got two points here.

#1- Religion is supposed to teach you what the best thing for a person with principles is supposed to do. It's supposed to teach you to do good stuff, so if a religion advocated suicide, then it wouldn't be "the religion of God" or "the true righteous worship of God."

#2- The point of martyrs being great people is to give credit to people who die for righteous causes. The point isn't to commit suicide. The point is to tell readers of the holy book, that someone who risks his life to help others, do good, etc. is going to heaven.

That's like saying that a parent who dies trying to save their children from a murderer is going to heaven.

That a person who in olden days fought to defend his/her tribe or town (and thus, his/her family) from destruction is going to go to heaven.

Here are some Lord of the Rings examples:

Boromir is going to heaven because he fought, not to help himself, but to help others.

Faramir, when he gets sent to "retake" the river town (Osgiliath, I think) and he fights "to the death." Thing is, that after he fell and couldn't get back up again, he gets saved. When his father sees him still alive, the idiot madman that he is, he pretends that his son is dead and goes to cremate his son as if he was dead, so that he can have "honor." But people wouldn't have known the truth, which was that he was in no way a man to be honored.

Good luck, Peace.

...That is a question devoid of value, since God has never and will never do this...this is not deserving of an answer. Your question is a hypothetical situation - why don't you deal with reality?
...Suicide is the ultimate selfishness (I am not getting my way so I'll just end it all...). It is the coward's way out. It takes no character whatsoever to do this. It is a waste and a tragedy.
...What takes character is to go with God, go with whatever He gives you in life, and honor Him through it. If we love (obey) Him and are one of His, He will work out all things together for our good - this promise is in the Old and New Testaments - and that is reality.

Suicide is a slap in the face to God. Taking your own life says, "hey God you screwed up by putting me here" Besides that, suicide is still murder. Murder of oneself will not be judged any less harshly than the murder of another. Logically, suicide cannot be the ultimate proof of love and obedience. Martyrdom holds that position. Martyrs choose to die for their beliefs, but they don't take their own lives, someone kills them. Think about it, it seems rather silly to say, I'm going to prove how much I love you by killing myself. It makes much more sense to say, I love you so much that I would be willing to die for you. There is a big difference.

God loved me that he sacrificed the highest form of sacrifice...so that I could live...why would he want me to prove to him that I would take my own life...with my own hand? Sin is sin...every mortal has it. And since your question is if? well, then I still would not do it. I care to much for people to make them suffer and the only one I've seen suffer from anyone that has done this ..are the people that loved them.

There is no verse in the Bible that proclaims suicide as being a moral sin. Samson prayed for the strength to die while killing his enemies.

Judah repented and then hung himself.

etc.

Well, in the bible, it says that everything happens by the will of god. So by the will of god, Jesus died on the cross. But Jesus is god, so Jesus died by his own will. Therefor, didn't Jesus technically commit suicide? But if suicide is a sin, and Jesus lived a sinless life, how is this possible?

And what is so special about Jesus living a sinless life, after all, he does make the rules

I don't believe in mortal sin or god.
All I know is that when a person commits suicide, they leave a lot of victims.

I would jump out a window, but it would have to be on the first floor.

There being no evidence of god, let alone about god's opinion, the question is meaningless.
