After my bf has a depressed episode (I sometimes don't hear from him....he wants everyone out of his life), he then acts as tho nothing happened. He says nothing at all about it. Is he aware of everything that happened and doesn't want to talk about it? Or is he actually unaware?

Also, sometimes, during the down times, he says really odd things. Is he aware of that? When manic or normal...he is so wonderful. Thanks for your help!!!

I am bi- polar as well and before I started treatment I was the same way. It may be part illness and part guy thing. I found it to be horribly embarrassing to have this problem. After it started to get worse and I came close to suicide I sought psychiatric help. Best thing I ever done. A simple metallic salt has helped to control this problem. Your BF needs help. He does not want to go for help because he thinks/hopes will power will eventually win. It won't. He needs to be convinced that its NOT a personal weakness. Its a condition/disease like being a diabetic. That is what I use to describe it to other people, like a diabetic. Treatable. Let him know this---I am ex-army, black belt, skydiver etc., kind of guy. It can happen to anyone. Pick up some pamphlets and they list many famous people that were/are afflicted with bi-polar.

Nothing but love to you.

I myself am bi-polar and after i go threw an episode I to also do not want to talk about it until I'm ready to which could be Hours,Weeks,Days,Or even Months it just depends how it goes threw his brain and the response comes out in different ways from different people. Also u might try if u r up to it have someone else confront him and ask him what happened. At least that normally works for me

The acting like nothing has happened is a boy thing, not a bipolar thing. us guys LOVE to sweep things under the carpet and make like they never happened - it's called denial. We use it a lot regarding our emotions. It's a bad habit and something that needs changing but so many boys use it so much and we seem comfortable with it (totally ignoring that it means our issues blow up elsewhere in our lives - we just deny that too)

He is aware of it, but has "pushed it aside" in his mind. It would be very confronting to bring it up with him (and he probably squirms a little and then blows up if you try).

He's probably aware that he says the odd things, however he might not be aware of how odd you find it.

Manic is nice, but be careful he doesn't go too over the top. Very manic people think they can fly and jump off the roof or spend like crazy, or gamble like crazy etc.

It's hard to know exactly what's going on with your boyfriend from descriptions like this, but the advice I can give you is for you to ask HIM questions like this (tactfully of course). Maybe you two could benefit from something like couples therapy-- a psychologist could help you voice your concerns and ask questions without coming across to him as confrontational, negative, whatever.
