First off DON'T WEAR GLOVES. This will freak them out becuase then it looks like these huge hands are coming at him. Birds that have been abused usually take a while to snap out of it. DO NOT try to take him out of the cage if he doesn't want to. The bird OBVIOUSLY doesn't trust humans, to him you are no different than his prior owners. What you need to do is sit next to his cage with peanuts, or some sort of treat, and read to him, talk to him etc, when he comes over to you give him a treat. Do this several times a day, the more people in your family that do it the better! This way he will see that whoever gives him these treats are ok people and that he can trust you. If you wantto let him out of his cage let him out on his own terms. When he wants to go back in he will, and then just go close the door behind him. You have to get this bird to trust you before you attempt to handle him!!

I have a friend who bought an abused African Grey, and it took almost 3 months before she could get him out of the cage willingly, in these situations, you have to let them move at their own speed! Just take it slow, patience is going to be the best thing with this bird, not pestering it to get it to come out when YOU want it to! Hope this help! :)

Have patience. Some birds that have been abused never recover fully and will always be biters. You can try leaving his cage open when you want him to come out and entice him out with treats. Many parrots are territorial and will be more aggressive when they are in their cage. You may have better luck with letting him come out on his own and taking him to another room to work with him. when you try to pick him up move slowly so he sees it coming and stay confident, birds can tell if you are nervous. good luck with your new friend

Be kind to it first of all. Then respect the bird. Birds will sense whether you can be trusted to be kind.
