Most heart worm meds have parasite protection in them as well so he's likely shedding a parasite burdon. If you live in an area where there is no "off" season for mosquitos, I would advise your vet what is going on. Keep an eye on him and if he does not improve, I would take him in for a check up. If you live in an area where there is an "off" season (for ex, I live in Michigan, so after the first hard frost, there is very little risk of mosquito activity, and there for heart worm infestations) I would continue your prevention as normal. Unfortunately, regardless of where you live, heart worms do not show up on tests until 6 months after exposure. I would recommend getting a test done early next year before spring.

Honestly, I don't have my dogs on it. I think it depends on your area and where you live. I live in Southern CA and "supposedly" heart worm disease isn't very prevalent in my area. It is a good idea to keep your dog on it, just in case. But like my vet said, you don't have to. But keep in mind paying the money you do for the heart worm meds is way worth it in the long run, because if you pet does get heart worm it is a ton of money to try and cure your pet along with some pricy bills ALSO your pet will go through a lot of stress on their body. I suggest asking your vet and letting him give you some suggestions.

Did you check what he has eaten lately? Was there a change in food? -- It could also be worms! -- They can get reinfected from other dogs (at least that's what I read on a medication for dogs)...! Double check with your vet!
