I work for a software reseller and get this question a lot from customers. Basically the amount of times you can download a piece of software is dictated by the software publisher. Microsoft, for example, only allows for a few installtions using the serial number contained with the installation media (install disk). Where as a smaller software publisher may not have a restriction. A limited install is there to protect the publisher from piracy or the illegal, unlicensed use of the software. If you have software that needs to be re-installed and the serial number or installation key is not working for you, you should call the software publisher to get a new number for installation. Be prepared to give the original serial number as a proof of purchase.

By the way, I do want to point out that when you install the software, you don't actually own the software. What the license does is give you the right to install and run the software. The actual ownership still resides with the software publisher, which is why publishers can put restrictions on installations and such. If you read the license user rights, sometimes called "end user licensing agreement" or more commonly "the terms and conditions" the publisher has listed all the things you can and cannot do as a user of the software and in most cases specifies that they still own the software and are just granting you the right to use it.

It is unlimited as long as you have it on one computer only.
That is if you want to be legal.

Norton has something in his anti-virus now that will prevent you installing its software on more than one computer. You can re-install it as many times as you need to...but it will only work on one computer.
