My girlfriend has experienced pain in the upper stomach, which sets in worse when she eats (as opposed to being relieved by eating). She also reported feeling better when she ate vegetables, instead of fatty foods. What could be the possible causes of this discomfort?

I forgot to mention that she leads a very stressful life and bad eating habits, since she is studying architecture and it often is a demanding career. I thought those might be important factors.

Probably her gallbladder, she needs to see her family doctor. They will order a whole bunch of tests (blood work and at least an ultrasound to check for stones). Its a common problem!

What your discribing is hard to understand... Upper stomach ?

I'll stop here and recommend Take her to the Doctor... Why?

Problem is behind and after the stomach has done its 1st job.

"Foodstuffs entering the stomach have been, to at least some extent, crushed and reduced in size by mastication, and impregnanted with saliva. The stomach provides four basic functions that assist in the early stages of digestion and prepare the ingesta for further processing in the small intestine:

It serves as a short-term storage reservoir, allowing a rather large meal to be consumed quickly and dealt with over an extended period of time.
It is in the stomach that substantial enzymatic digestion is initiated, particularly of proteins.
Vigorous contractions of gastric smooth muscle mix and grind foodstuffs with gastric secretions, resulting in liquefaction of food, a prerequisite for delivery of the ingesta to the small intestine.
As food is liquefied in the stomach, it is slowly released into the small intestine for further processing. "

If are reading this No need for Emergency room Just Need to go to Your family Doctor or Local Clinic tomarrow... Take any Meds she has been taken in the past 6 months with you to the doctor...

If she has been taking Asprin for pain Stop at 325mg (1 Tablet) per 6 hours... Til you see the doctor...

Also if she has been drinking alot of Diet Soda Stop... I also recommend if you have bottle water that she drinks 1 (12 16 24oz which ever she can stand) but whole bottle before going to bed... If she has NOT burped in a few months you might even get her a regular Coke from the store drink 4oz quickly if she burb's real quick and loud and pain goes away Thats a good sign...

The most likely cause of her symptoms is either gallbladder stones or a duodenal ulcer. Both conditions are worsened by eating. Gallbladder spasm (or colic) usually is worsened by greasy or fatty foods. Duodenal ulcers are typically worse in the evening. If she is having fevers or chills, she should be seen right away for a possible infection of her gallbladder.

In any case, she definitely needs to be seen by her physician and have further testing. In the meantime, have her stay on a bland diet, avoid very greasy foods, and avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory pain killers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen.

I hope she feels better.

What she's got is heartburns. It comes with a hot burning sensation that could last from minutes to a couple of hours. It results from build up of gas within the stomach due to indigestion or improper digestion. Predisposing factors includes- bad eating habits like eating late, eating and going to bed almost immediately after, eating foods that contains less fibres without drinking much water. Foods like beans. However ,just like you rightly observed eating vegetables, fruits etc aids digestion and that explains why she experiences relief after taking vegetables. Identifying the foods that predisposes someone to heartburns and avoiding same or taking them with more of vegetables and water helps a great deal.
