DLP has a good refresh rate and is good for watching sports or fairly good in gaming. DLP systems do have good colour spectrum.
Only problem about this type of projection system is that it has moving parts and will in time fail unless maintained properly.
LCD, has no moving parts and is fairly good in well-lit rooms. Picture quality is not bad at the moment. Problems with LCD is that is sometimes does lag a little, depending on what you get and size. And it does pixelate as well.
There is a fairly new technology out there called the LCOS based system. JVC designed the first system and then Sony did their one. I found that the quality of the JVC LCOS based system is better than the new SXRD2. The JVC is the 52HD-ILA model or something like that. Check it out. I think it looks great!

Make sure you compare similar set types. DLP is only available in projectors, while LCD comes in both flat-panel and projectors. The "moving part" in a DLP projector is a spinning color wheel. They are very reliable (in fact, DLP projectors have an overall better reliablilty than LCD, mainly because of LCD panel problems. Fortunately things are improving.) The main issue to watch for in a DLP set is the possibility you can see "rainbows" (an artifact of the color wheel). Look at a picture with a bright area on a DLP screen, and scan your eyes across the picture. If you see a trail of colors, you are seeing the "ralinbow" effect. Not everyone can see this, but it is bothersome to some.
The highest quality overall picture you can get today is from an LCD projector, the Sony SXRD. It is a true 1080p display (unlike the DLP sets which "simulate" 1080p) with excellent color and contrast ratio. (DLP still has a slightly better dark-picture performance, but the difference is slight.)
You cannot see "screen door" on the new 1080p sets because the pixels are small and there is very little space between them (unlike earlier LCD sets). LCOS is a form of LCD (liquid crystal on silicon).

What I did is some research and found out what we thought was best to us and what we wanted. We chose the DLP Toshiba HML62196, yes, the 62 inch rear projector. On sale and with promotions we paid 1,999.00 You get more screen for less money. It only weighs 100 pounds. We love it. However, you should do your research too for yourself. Good Luck, I know it is confusing. I did not like the way I couldn't see anything but black when standing sideways by the LCDs. However, we have a very large living room too, So that too has to be kept into consideration.

When talking about rear projection TV's, it would definitely have to be DLP. DLP provides superior colors to LCD's. Of course, you got the burn-in factor on LCD's. Only disadvantage of rear projection is limited viewing angle compared to flat panels like LCD or plasma flat panels.
When talking about flat panels, I am still a big fan of plasmas. I have a 50" plasma.

God they're actually BOTH good TVs....
The DLP has better color over the LCD....
The LCD has NO moving parts in the Light engine...the DLP does have moving parts....Moving parts can break or create noise...noise like the Scuh-REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
of a dried out bearing... I have had to replace several color wheels because of that .....
