Cats don't like the feel of aluminum foil under their feet. Tear off strips of aluminum foil, crumple them up & then run your hand over the strips to uncrumple them. Place the strips on the floor surrounding the Christmas tree. When the cat steps on the foil, it will back off and finally stop approaching the tree at all.
I did this for about a week to keep my cat off the living room furniture. To this day, the cat still will not get in my recliner chair even though I no longer put foil on it. It did work to keep him from knocking the decorations off of the Christmas tree but I do have to repeat it each Christmas for a few days until he catches on.

After not having pets for one year, after our special little ones past away from age, I couldn't stand it anymore and adopted our male cat. Now we've adopted a little female. So....
I simply put the tree in our den, which has a door so we can close it off when we're not there to watch the cats. I do use a squirt gun for other situations, but I'd have to use it a lot to keep them off the tree, and the presents and lights could get wet.
I love the holidays, and love our pets. Why be without either one?
At least for us, everybody is happy this way.

At my house we use a spray bottle of water, and spray the cats in the face with water whenever they start playing in and with the tree.
I think I also remember reading some place that cats don't like the smell of Oranges or maybe Lemons. So try spraying around the base of the tree with Orange or Lemon smell and that might keep them away.

Either get rid of the cat or the Christmas tree.... this is from my personal experience. My cat loves sitting under our tree. This is our first year with a cat, so I'm glad to hear my cat is normal. Sorry I couldn't help you though! Have a Merry Christmas!

This year we got two kittens and decided not to have a tree after asking the same question.
Next year we will see.
I didn't want to hang it from the ceiling or tie it to the wall as some mentioned.
So, I just have three small stick and artificial trees they don't bother to pursue.

I have NO idea, but let me know when you find out! - I even put bitter apple spray all over it and my tree had been knocked over twice! Pine needles EVERYWHERE! What a nightmare. Sorry man, I feel your pain.

I don't mean to sound cruel, but a water gun is a fairly effective training tool for cats. Just try not to hit them in the eyes/ ears if you can help it.

we have a "boundary" spray (that is the name of it) it keeps away dogs and cats, and we used it on our Christmas tree and the cat never went back, and also...we had our cat trying to get onto out "village" where we had artificial snow, and she would knock it off. i sprayed some on the carpet and the edges of the furniture and she has not been back since. there is also a laser boundary and it beeps and sprays them when they get near the area i found one similar on the following website.
