They shouldn't smell. Maybe they just smell different. Older people don't use as many of the new different fragrances that are available today in soaps, shampoos and perfume.
My mother who is 74 has late stage Alzheimer's and depends on me to bath, dress and many other things does not smell. I use different fragrances of soap, shampoo and perfumes that smell good.
I kinda know what you might mean because I know an older couple that still use lard soap and very low fragrance items and they don't smell, they just smell different than what I am use to.
Sorry for rambling but hope this helps.

My wife and I have noticed this. We're apparently both having some body chemistry changes that are affecting our natural smells or phernomes. The body puts out signals via changes in hormones that affect the phernomes. It does change the way a person smells, and affects the way colognes smell.
I'm asking my doctor on the next visit. I suspect it's just a part of aging.
People have a natural odor at every age.

My grandparents have all been dead for over 21 years. I'd give anything to smell any of them (in a living, breathing condition, that is)
Be thankful you still have them. I was 16 when I lost my last grandparent. My brother was only 12!

Being someone who has worked alot with the elderly... well they do not smell in general unless they have some kind of illness like cancer or urine leakage... Maybe they are needing more assistance from thier children (your mom or dad) to make sure they take daily baths.

I think that old people are so used to their own smell that they might not see anything wrong with it. Plus maybe when you're old you don't like to shower too much or something because it hurts. I don't know what age it starts, but hopefully it won't happen to you.

It could be their chemistry. Old age tends to make a person become acidic. Give them a test w/ litmus paper. If their ph is not balanced, coral calcium is said to work at fixing this.

It's probably a combination of Vapor rub on their chests and prune juice on their breath and moth balls in their clothes and the smell of decaying flesh doesn't help any

Just a heads up ...one of the most common killer / crippler of the elderly is the dreaded slip n fall ... the bathroom (tub or shower) is top of the list ...... so being alive and a bit malodorous or dead ...... I think they chose living.
