for some reason, i keep gettin pimples (mostly on the sides of my face) that turn purple. I don't try to pop them or anything, and they tend to stay purple for a very long time and leave dark scars.
why does this happen, and how can i treat it?

They are called boils and the reason this happens is because the pimple gets embedded in to your skin and causes you to bleed from the pressure the worst thing to do is pop them. It is a part of puberty or is related to having really oily skin and clogged pours. I know that if you go to the doctor there is medicine that might fix your problem. Girls can usually get away with taking birth control and men can take a form of it too but I am not sure if it is a different form or what. Try going to the doctor. Also in some cases facial cleansers can make it worst so beware. This case is a form of acne.

Go to your dermatologist, apparently there are some new meds that can turn that mess around.
