whatever they REALLY like. One of my sisters loves tequila, so I'm giving her a bottle of Patron. For the vodka drinker Grey Goose is good. A bottle of Bailey's or Kailua would be nice also. They have lots of gift sets this time of year to choose from. Just choose whatever you think they'll like best.

I aggree with a few people that have said 'Describe your friend and I'll be able to help you better'. There are so many things to consider ... here's some situations, if it helps.
Dinner Party in the holiday season: I'd lean towards enough Wine or Champagne for everyone to share. You can generally serve a group of 6 on 4 bottles, and at about 10 dollars a bottle, your not too heavily invested. I'm not a huge fan of champagne, but I love The Fat Bastard line of wines, especially their Merlot and Shiraz. It's got a full bodied but accessiable taste, and it's a great conversation starter in the States.
For The Individual: I personally feel that every booze can have characteristics that can be loved, just the individual needs to like the booze. I would deffinatly go for a more top shelf brand, and a booze that is intended to accentuate itself with little to no mixers. My three favorites would be Vodkas (Ketle 1, Belvedere, Chopin, and Grey Goose) Scotchs and Bourbons (the glens, johnny, and makers mark) and Tequilla (especially dark anejos).
For a Real Treat: Know your friends! I used to make giftbaskets for my friends that would include their favorite booze, candies or snakes that compliment that booze, and a shot or serving glass. I especially love thrift stores for this, because you have so many old special edition glasses that people will give away, and they can be bought for under a dollar a piece. Bourbon with mason jars full of chocolate covered cherries, for example. Crown and rocks glasses with dark chocolates. Tequillas and caramels with shot classes. There's nothing wrong with being quick and grabbing something off the shelf, but there's deffinatly satisfaction in giving your friend a complete thrill.

Asking for what a good gift of alcohol for Christmas is similar to asking what pants should I give for Christmas, or what shoes..it depends first on how much you want to spend and who you are getting it for. Me, I'm 40, enjoy expensive single malt scotch and great cigars. If a woman gifted me with a bottle of Lagavullin and a box of Ashton VSGs, I'd pretty much think she was proposing.
Generally speaking, the more of a partier the person is, lean towards the exotic stuff like aftershock or jagermeister. More conservative go towards the sipping whiskeys. Be more specific and I can as well.

I would suggest a mid level champagne as it is one of the more popular and generalized alcoholic beverages. My brand suggestion is Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin. It is generally my favorite of the few houses I have tried with regularity. It should only run around $30-$35 at some of the larger liquor outlets. At this point, I will mention that I am from Kentucky, home of bourbon and Rip Van Winkles 15 year is about the same price and almost as good as the 20 year.

Champagne or Sparkling Wine makes a perfect gift...New Year's Eve is just around the corner.
Champagne is the traditional wine for toasting special occasions. True Champagnes come from the Champagne region of France. Similar wines produced elsewhere are called Sparkling Wine. Brut Champagnes are more dry than those labeled Extra Dry.
Recommendations:
Henriot NV Brut Souverain - $45
Roederer Estate NV Brut - $18.99
Domaine Chandon NV Blanc de Noirs - $19.49
Gloria Ferrer NV Brut - $19.49
Cheers!

Here's a list:
Grey Goose Vodka, Level Vodka, Makers Mark Bourbon, Knob Creek Bourbon, Tanquerey Gin, Plymouth Gin, Sauza Hornitos Tequila, Patron Tequila, Crown Royal Canadian Whisky, Bailey's Irish Cream, Kahlua Coffee Liqueur, Macallan Single Malt Scotch, Dewars Blended Scotch, Highland Park Scotch,Captain Morgan Rum, Mt Gay Rum.
That's for spirits, but you also need to find out what someone likes to drink.

A decent red wine or champagne. Unless you know specifically what kind of liquor they like to drink, you could completely waste your money. If you are set on giving liquor, vodka is always a safe choice. Ketel one for the moderate expensive, grey goose if you want people to know you spent money. There are lots better than grey goose but not necessary for gift giving.

Vodka..it goes with everything.
If you know they like fruity drinks, then get a bottle of Effen. It is a black bottle with a cherry twist. Otherwise, get them that Starbuck or Godiva stuff too works
