I like Napster's deal where you can enroll in their 3 month program and get unlimited downloads of songs (not pay per download) and they will give you a free MP3 Player for yourself, I'm giving mine as a gift as I already have one. The downloads are really cool! The program is $14 per month for 3 months!

It definately depends on the client, industry, and/or customer.
It also depends on the objective of the promotional item or marketing campaign. Will it be given out to advertise a business?
For instance, what would be better for a car dealership? Key chains or ink pens?
Typically the best inexpensive give-aways are ink pens, letter openers, key chains, etc..
They usually run in a price range of 10 to 60 cents a piece and a minimum quantity of 300.

The best giveaway I have seen lately is the flash drive / jump drive for the computers. You can buy 128MB jump drive for about 5$ a piece if bought in the bulk.
They make good gift.

in my opinion it depends on the client. who would be receiving these items? some things are more appropriate than others. in my mind, inexpensive would be: keyrings, magnets, coozies, etc.
