I have two female cats. Both have seperate litter pans. Every day my female calico (Jasmyn) poops in the floor ONCE. Only once. It's always right beside her litter pan. I'll clean it up, put it in the litter pan, and cover it up and show her. But still, the next day, she's done it again. She pees in her litter pan, and other than the one time a day, she also poops in her litter pan. Any suggestions?

LOL. That is the ultimate turf marking. I'll just bet that is what she is doing. She is putting it there to let the other cat know that that is her box. Oh, I'm sorry. I know it's not funny for you. I'm just trying to think the thoughts that cat is thinking when she does it.

Why not consider getting a pack of puppy training pads. I know, the ultimate goal is to have her go in the box, but if she is persistent in this behavior, it might be next to impossible to stop. If you could put a puppy training pad down where she does it, at least it would be easier to clean up.

If she is otherwise healthy, and she has regular vet checks, I would doubt that this is a health problem. If she hasn't seen a vet lately, maybe consider a visit to discuss the situation. I've heard that cats can get blocked anal glands and do weird things, but to do this just once, is almost like she is making a statement of some sort.

The next time you put it in her box, don't cover it. Just let it lay there on the top. Do that a few times. She might need to cover it before she gets in again, and that might help to break the cycle. Just dump it off the puppy training pad into the litterbox, right on top and out in the open. See what happens.

They sure keep you guessing, dont' they?

All of the suggestions are good ones. Clean litter boxes, privacy, litter the cat likes, at least one litter box per cat, however, after hearing about this problem for years I can tell you it is probably none the those, though it can be. Since it's only poop she is trying to tell you something. One of my coworkers in our vet practice had the same problem. We put him in a cage for 3 weeks with a litter box and he used the litter box everyday, didn't miss once. The minute she took him home he pooped about 1 foot from his litter box. She had some construction on her home and her cat was able to get outside, after he went out he never pooped in her home outside the litter box again. I've heard this from many cat owners. She probably uses your sisters cats box because he's out of his house. Unless you want to use meds like a tranquiler, you probably either have to put up with it or let her outside. Sorry. Just be very glad it's not urine.

My sisters little girl cat does the same problem (she has 4), she figured out that the cat will only go in the litter box after it's freshly cleaned as in new litter and everything, yet she comes to our house and has no problem in our liter boxes. Maybe try buying another liter box and see if she's more inclined to use that one. Also if you can catch her going on the floor pick her up and put her in the litter.

My cat, Higgins used to be the same way. He'd only poop and pee in the pan every once in a while. It was sooo ANNOYING.

Cats know they're supposed to go in the box or whatever but they just don't want to. My cat goes in the bow now but it took YEARS for him to stop going on the ktchen floor!

Change litter brands? She may not like the feeling of the current litter that may get stuck to her when she does her business?

Well maybe the litter pan is to small.

My cat used to do that too. It drove me crazy, but I attributed it to bad aim. She would crouch in the pan but poop over board. She just never got it right. So she became an indoor/outdoor cat....she turned out to be really good at hunting the neighborhood rodent population.

Try a larger box with higher sides.
