Colchicine is used as needed for acute gouty attacks. Also used is indomethacin, a NSAID like ibuprofen.
He should also be on something like allopurinol daily for suppresion.

Gout is a condition where uric acid crystals build up in the body.
This can happen in the area of the big toe and cause a lot of pain.
Our foods contain purines; some foods are higher in this than others.
The doctor may place you on a lower purine diet (of which they will usually provide you a list of foods to avoid. There is also medications that can lower the uric acid in the blood
Here an alternative way to cure gout?

There are effective medications to treat gout, but if your husband is currently taking medication for his gout and still had an attack, then you should tell his doctor he is having problems from them or they are not working. However, only his doctor can tell you which medicines are "best" for him.
Here's a link to a website that lists the most common medications to treat gout, though: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/gout/page7_em.htm
Hope this answers your question!

Badkharma is correct about the colchecin but be carefull with the Allopurinol, it can drop the uric acid level to quickly and can bring on a gout attack. Good luck, my husband is still getting over the most severe case his doctor has ever seen. It was so bad he was in a wheelchair for 3 days....

All the meds you take for this has side effects own the kidneys...I have it and it is very painful.Eat Bing cherries about a hand full a day and force all the water you can drink. This helps flush it out of your joints.Sweets hurts mine worse then anything. And stress. If it attacks in the big toe or elbow you can emerge torn up strips of brown paper bag in vinegar and wrap it up with the strips of wet paper when it dries redo and the second time it should be gone if not keep apply till it goes..This really works but the smell is worth the pain leaving...God bless and Merry Christmas..Be careful what meds you are given because it will shut your kidneys down..it happen to my dad
