I am a conservative because I was brought up with traditional family values. I raise my children the same way. Life is very precious and liberals can suck a baby out of the womb and kill it and then go have lunch right after wards. So let me ask you , what do you want to be?

You ask the best questions!
Labels are always difficult. And I am not an exception.
I am conservative in some ways. I believe in definite boundaries, discipline, rules, responsibility and expectations. I am hopelessly old fashioned in that I believe in spanking, and not just as a last resort.
However, I guess one would say I am liberal or loose in other ways. For example, I was in a discussion with some other Moms and they were asking how long I thought kids should be allowed to play out in the snow, depending on their ages. My reaction was "For God's sake, let them stay out as long as they want." In orther words let kids be kids.
Although some people would see me as a strict parent that is really not true. I believe that mostof the time (and this depends on age and different kids vary) discipline can be instilled by talking, reprimand and even reason.
But , on the other hand I believe that when punishment is necessary spanking works best.
So my kids are punished less than most kids, but spanked more. I am not sure whether that makes me liberal or conservative.
I believe in encouraging a love of learning and free thought. Therefor I encourage my kids to read anything they want, do anything their curiosity dictates (now there could be safety considerations here). I encourage free thinking and imagination.
On the other hand, even though I do not believe in homework (and I am also a teacher) I expect my kids to get it done . And again, fooling around on this has resulted in a spanking.
And I do encourage free thinking and questioning of everything. But, on the other hand, I send my kids to Catholic Schools and they are required to attend weekly Mass. I want them to be exposed to the faith that is important to me. However, as they grow they are free to question it and take what they want from it, if anything.
So, I don't know if I have answered your question, except to illustrate the difficulutes of putting on labels and demonstrate my quirky approach to parenthood.

I think I'm a liberal parent...and I'd like to mention "liberal" parents also teach right from wrong and we don't all preach abortion as a solution to everything. We're only at 18 month though so we haven't really had any tests of true parenting. However we do know we're not going to have any enforced religious practices *as my fiance is atheist and I'm agnostic* and that our daughter will probably grow up hearing mommy's rants against certain legislation and getting read quantum physics books at bedtime by daddy. However we do believe in spanking. I think my mother was probably considered liberal simply because she didn't have truly conservative views and discussed my opinions without being judgmental. I don't think you CHOOSE to be either you just are due to your belief systems.
PS To the first poster...I don't think there's human being on the planet who can think of abortions in terms that crass and heartless.

What makes you more liberal or more conservative when it comes to parenting? I am not a disciplinarian and am open to new ideas about parenting
How were your parents? Dad was an Irish Republican, supported the armed resistance against the British, Mam was Irish catholic mother,
Please give examples to support how you parent liberally or conservatively. I don't hit my children and promote an open minded household
Why do you choose to be liberal or conservative? I don't choose, it is who I am, My beliefs are mine and i make up my own mind about what to believe, I don't need to be a member of a club to have my opinions mapped out for me

Dare I get in to this one!... I would have to say, do the people having children know how many are enough as to not over extend there own personal income and not rely on tax payer dollars to raise them? Conservative!
Do you're children run the home? Not in a conservative household! Do you're children talk back to you? not in a conservative household! Do you're children think that working is simply showing up at there job? Do you're children get up and run around in a restaurant and you just sit there because " oh you just can't controll you're children and people will just have to live with it attitude" Not Conservative! It's a simple matter of manners and good values vs children that are ignored, neglected, bought off daily and never taught right from wrong. Are you're children interrupting you right now instead of picking up there room, taking out the trash and getting ready for school tomorrow? or are they just sitting back there playing game boy be cause you asked them two hours ago to do those things? Not Conservative!

What makes me conservative when it comes to parenting? All the stuff I did when I was a teenager and got away with.
How were my parents? Pretty reasonable, actually. But, that's with 30+ years of hindsight and 5 kids.
Examples: one of my sons started getting into trouble (drinking, abuse of OTC cough medicines, theft, etc.). I pulled him out of school, started homeschooling him and didn't let him leave the house (on his own) for a year. He was 15 when it started.
Why am I conservative? My life is much easier when I'm the boss.

My kids are 25 and 19 now. But I was...I guess I was both. I mean I took them to church and taught them what I believed to be right from wrong (conservative), but I listened to them and tried to understand their point of view and encouraged them to develop their own personalities. I asked my 19 year old just now if I was a liberal or conservative parent and she said..."your weird...neither really". I guess I'm kind of a conservative person...but I want my children to be thinkers and make intelligent decisions, and not necessarily my decisions. My 25 year old daughter is married now and a vegan. She feels very strongly about humane treatment of animals and is a supporter of PETA and such groups. She has a lot of views that are different than mine, but I feel very proud of her ability to think for herself and decide what she thinks is important. I like my kids to stand for something. That's a value that I've always expressed to them. If you think it's right, and really believe in it, and your conscience talks to you, and you can intellectualize it, then stand for it even if it's not what I've or anyone else tells you is true. THINK FOR YOURSELF! DON't let anyone, even me, tell you what is true.
My mom was definitely as liberal parent. When I was a teenager she tried to get me to take the pill and when I got pregnant with my now 25 year old daughter and wasn't yet married she tried to get me to get an abortion (LIBERAL for the times).

It depends on what the subject is. On some things I feel that I am very conservative, but on others I think I am liberal.
I think that I parent the same way that my parents did, though I feel that my dad was more conservative than my mom was, and I lean more towards her on some things.
I don't have a set age at which I will allow my kids to date. It will
depend on the situation and their maturity.
I don't agree with abortion or gay marriages.
I think that a childs religious training is up to their parents.
I don't have a set age at which I will allow my daughter to wear make-up. I think that too many parents feel that make-up will encourage a girl to become promiscuous, and I simply think that is not the case. Make-up or no make-up, a girl will get more influence from her parents teachings or from her peers, than from whether or not her parents allow her to wear a little eyeshadow or lipgloss.
I feel that God has a place in school, just as he has a place at home or at work. I don't believe he should be shunned from either place.
So I guess you can determine from that, which things I am liberal on and which I am conservative on.
