It depends. I have curly hair, and it does not respond well to shampoos. I have changed my routine to one made for curly hair. I have not used shampoo in the last six months and my hair has never looked better. I have better curl definition and less frizz.
I wash my hair and scalp with conditioner, and my stylist says that my hair and scalp have never looked better. I do check my ingredients. I avoid ingredients that cause buildup.
Those with straight and/or wavy hair may well need stronger ingredients that shampoos give. If regular shampoos are harsh for you, you can use one with gentler ingredients such as cocobetaine.

First, washing your hair everyday does NOT make your head lose it's natural oil, it washes away what is already there, but the oil glands on your scalp is always producing more sebum. You don't necessarily have to wash your hair everyday unless it's gets really oily over night, every other day is okay, in the shower you could do motions as if you were shampooing just to break up the oil and let it run out with warm water. It does wash the color out of your hair faster though. (if you get your hair colored) But I think that it's worth it having to apply your hair color a week or two earlier & having clean healthy scalp than going a couple of weeks and having oily gross dirty scalp. Shampoo is primarilly to cleanse the scalp, just think, you put product in your hair and are constantly sweating and producing oil.. & if you go days without washing your hair, all if it is building up. kinda gross yenno? ps. putting heat on your hair everyday is WAY more damaging than washing it everyday, it doesn't make your hair dry to wash it everyday, use cooler water and use a leave in conditioner & a heat protectant. another ps. I was reading someo f the other responses.. someone said that using conditioner will help "repair the hair", so.. once the hair is out of the scalp, that's it, if there is any damage there is no way you could repair it.. you could only cut it off, products like the BedHead split end mender gives the appearance of closing the split by making the hair stick together at the end, but once the product is washed out, it's split again. Hair is made of kertatin, just like nails, just think when you break a nail does the corner that broke off grow back? You've gotta cut it and wait till it grows out! The only thing you can do is condition and protect the hair that is NOT damaged to prevent stress...

According to my hair dressor, I have very healthy hair and I have always washed my hair twice a day. You need to use a quality shampoo that has a conditioner or a separate conditioner though.
The quality of your hair is determined by genetics and health. If you have brittle hair, I strongly recommend you see a doctor and have the doctor check out your thyroid. Low or high levels of thyroid can cause the hair to be brittle. Best to have the medical end checked.
And I hope you know that using a mouse or coloring the hair and blowing drying all do dry out the hair and could cause it to go brittle.
Good luck

yes, it does.
people might say that they wash their hair every day because it gets oily, but that's just because their scalp produces more oil than usual to make up for the oil that is lost when hair is washed every day. after a while, the oil production will go back to normal.
Using shampoo every day is too rough on your hair, but you should use conditioner every day.
Also, when shampooing, use only a soup- spoon amount, a little more or less depending on your hair length.

It does not mess up your hair. Use a good shampoo and conditioner, if you shampoo twice it actually helps to get all the soap out of your hair. There are some of us who have oily hair that need to shampoo every day. I have been doing it for years and my hair is in good shape.

this is true. your scalp makes oil for a purpose. so, leaving it there for a day or two only improves the luster of your hair, and keeping it healthy and strong. if you over wash, it can be dull, damaged, and yes...brittle.
