I've had cats all my life and all females who were affectionate, but I never imagined that males could be so much more affectionate.

When I "discovered" Boo, under a mailbox on the corner of 8th Avenue & 22nd street in NYC on a freezing February night, almost 6 years ago, I had my first male kitty.

He and his "brother" Spooky, are the most affectionate, attentive and caring cats that have ever owned me.

Each morning Boo wakes me by cleaning my face and grooming my hair. Spooky on the other hand absolutely MUST give me a full body massage. The sound of their purring alone is almost as loud as my alarm clock which usually goes off 15 minutes after they start.

They both insist on being with me when I shower - one at each end of the tub getting sprayed by the water. As soon as I turn the shower off, it's the "attack daddy's toes and calves" time while I dry myself. Then of course, I need to dry them.

When I'm on the computer, Boo insists on being over my shoulder watching the monitor, while Spooky lays sprawled across my lap.

Even when they're playing together or wrestling, if one cries out, the other stops, and begins to lick & comfort the "wounded" one.

While I am thinking of getting them a little "sister", (as I slowly turn into the crazy cat man of Brooklyn), I most definitely prefer the males to the females. They are MUCH more loving and attentive.

Point-in-fact, I fostered a sweet little cat named Mimi who was about 14 years old and dying of cancer. Boo was so attentive and protective of her that Spooky got jealous. However, when Boo wasn't around to "protect" her, Spooky would bring her his toys, groom her, and even gently nudge her towards her food or water when she was too weak to move. When she passed away, they were devastated. I have never heard such a heart-wrenchingly mournful and constant meow in my life.

Boo would sit next to where her bed was and yeowl for weeks afterwards and Spooky, a bit more aloof than his big-brother got over it in a few days, but he kept looking all over the house for her, walking around with a toy mouse in his mouth to offer her and would drop the toy and just meow up to the heavens. It was devastating to see their emotions like this.

So, long story just a bit longer - YES! Toms are definitely much more affectionate than Queens.

I have no proof of this and there are ALWAYS exceptions to the rule, BUT after being a Vet Tech for 19 years the nicest cats I think generally are orange males. Calico and Torti shell cats (which are always female) tend to be the NOT nicest cats to humans. For whatever reason, orange females can be pretty independent and sometimes not very nice. All the ones in between, gray ones, black ones, spotted ones stripe ones, male or female can be either. Usually nicer than the calico's. The exotic cats are another whole ballgame. You really need to be careful, some are still more feral , the exotics that is.
Play with the cat, hold it, talk to it, get to know it before you decide to take it home.
Good luck!

I think males are sometimes more demonstrative - meaning, if they are going to be affectionate, they may be more so. If they are a talker, maybe they are very talkative.

My females have always been pretty loving, but they've been quieter too. I now have my 2nd male and both my males have been very playful, very outgoing, and very affectionate.

My females have been, and the one I have now is, very sweet but much more quiet.

The exception for me personally, was my first cat. A female, full blooded Siamese - she was incredible in every way. And I loved her every day of her 18 years.

I have eight cats, and my male orange cat and my male black cat are the most affectionate. My white female cat, and the tiger female cat are very moody. The male cats are happy-go-lucky and are always in a good mood.

Over the years fostering cats, and having my own brood, I've notice that male kittens are much more hyper than females and don't interact with humans as much. Female kittens are clingy and loving.

Then they grow up and it flips. The female just wants to be off in a corner by herself, unless she wants to be bothered, and the males are just about turning themselves inside out to be on your lap or next to you all the time.

Mature males and kitten females are the most affectionate.

I totally agree with the "vet tech" above me. I really think there are a couple factors...two of which include the sex of the cat & the breed. I have a female calico and she's really tempremental. She's a grouch to everybody but me, and she has to have 10 feet of personal space. She's also very territorial. I also have an orange female tabby, and she's very independent. She's nice to everyone, but she doesn't like alot of love. The best cats that I have seen are my parents orange male cats. They are the friendliest I've ever seen.

I disagree! I have a calico (female) Puzzles and she is by far the most loving cat Ive ever had- ive had 7 in my lifetime (3 males). She loves people-she'll even go in water to get attention, hangs out with our yellow lab, is an angel at the vet (our lab Cody is a handful) and will do ANYTHING for a treat. She is on my lap right now watching me type- I think you hurt her feelings lol I think affection comes with the owner- if you show an animal love that is consistent they will give you love in return.

yes, I beleive that. Of the female cats we've had none of them really want to jump onto the lap for a cuddle and they tended to be more feisty. Males are more playful and lovely and when I next get a cat I will make sure I get a male one for this reason.

I breed Maine Coon cats and customers always want boys over the girls. Personally, I like female cats better. I like them better because I feel like I have to work to get through to them, but when I do, they are bonded to me for life. My boys are like cat-sluts: they are very affectionate, but are affectionate with everyone.
