I take care of several outdoor cats. I keep their food and water on my porch. It's starting to get cold outside and their water has been turning to ice. Is there anything I can put in the water to keep it from freezing that won't harm the cats? Is there some kind of product that I'm unaware of? Or am I stuck changing their water several times a day for the rest of the winter?

Also, is it okay if the water is warm (not hot)? Will it hurt them at all?

No harm in warm water. In fact the pets will most likely enjoy it during the cold weather.
Here are some heated water bowls. Mostly for dogs, but the cats can get to it too.

There is no way to stop it from freezing short of putting it on a heat rock or something. As long as you provide some fresh water at least once a day that isn't frozen, they will be fine. Putting it out there a little warm (not hot) is fine too.

Could you put the food & water inside a box (but with a section removed so they can get to it) to sort of protect it a bit and slow down the freezing process?

I don't want to sound harsh, but if the cats can put up with being STUCK outdoors.......

perhaps you could move their food and water inside just over the winter season???
you could also try adding a little bit of warm water every time it starts to turn to ice.

I think you have to change it often. Also, water from your hot water heater has too much sediment in it which is harmful for the feline friends. And please, DO NOT try anti-freeze.
