I don't think you could classify Ultram with a narcotic. It is an non-narcotic pain reliever.

Ultram(tramadol HCL) is marketed as being non narcotic but it is however an opiate, a derivative of codeine, much the same as dextromethorphan in cough syrup is non narcotic, but is a synthesized derivative of the codeine molecule. It does have some opiate side effects like euphoria and constipation as well as tolerance and withdrawal just like codeine.

No. It is a pain medicine given for mild to moderately severe pain INSTEAD of a narcotic. I have been on ultram (tramadol) since May. I, personally, don't feel it is as effective as hydrocodone or oxycodone.

It should be controlled. It is addictive - beware!!! It's a fantastic painkiller, but shouldn't be taken regularly. I've been on it for years off and on, but when I took it every day for 6 weeks, I got myself addicted to the stuff (wasn't taking it for pain management anymore) and made a decision to cut it out for the next month completely. I had to deal with withdrawal symptoms, but can now survive without it unless it's necessary.
