I am looking to purchase an alto saxophone. I am wondering what might be a good maker. Price is not important, but I am looking for something well made! Not a student or beginner sax. Thanks!

There are only a few good saxophone manufacturers. They are:
Yamaha
Selmer
Cannonball
Yanigasawa
Keilwerth
If you look up any of those companies you can see where dealers are and what saxophones they have to try out.

These three companies make the top alto's in my opinion as a person with 20 yrs experience as a band director and private music teacher. You can't go wrong with any of them. It boils down to which one you feel plays the best after trying them out. Most music stores will have Selmer and Yamaha. Yanigasawa is a well established but because the of prices there a little harder to get your hands on.

Yamaha
Yanigasawa
Selmer

I would also recommend going to wwbw.com

If you are buying any instrument, you should definately try it out first before making such a huge investment.

We bought a yamaha pro62 and love it. You can try Sam Ash because they beat other stores in prices. If you want to buy online, http://www.wwbw.com will let you have the instruments for a "trial" period to see which you like best.

Also, experiment with different mouthpieces. My husband and I both play on the alto and use different mouthpieces. Again, most places will let you have a trial period with different choices.

Good Luck!

I have a selmer and I have never had any problem from it. Also yamaha is pretty good. They're tenors but I'm sure there wouldn't be much of a difference.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/
http://www.music123.com/
