Its not just called a square of butter, but there is actually a term for it. Does anyone know?

Actually, the small disk or square of butter takes its name from the tiny little dish they used to sit on...

"Butter Pats: tiny individual plates, approximately three inches in diameter, were manufactured in a multitude of shapes and designs by the finest porcelain houses in the world, reached the height of fashion from approximately 1880 to 1910. Collectors find butter pats interesting for the sheer variety of pieces that can be found."

It is a pat of butter and you can get a cutter that you use on a stick of butter that even cuts it into pats. I know because I have one.
