It is definitely not too late to begin. My dad trained into his sixties before retiring his Martial Arts career. Also, Morihei Oeshiba (O-sensei and founder of Aikido) trained and taught into his late 80s. Martial Arts training at any age will provide better health and fitness. Asking if it is too late to learn Martial Arts at 33 is much like asking if it is too late in life to go back to college, or too late at 33 to begin exercising. It is never too late to learn that which makes us better.

I am now 20, and I also want to take up martial arts. I took Karate when I was like 9; wish I had stuck with it. I'm sure that for either of us it would be definitely a health plus, but I don't think that a level could be attained comparable to that of one who has studied since a very young age.

Not at all. Pay attention to your body type and what you want to achieve. I am 33 and feeling great. I studied for several years the college and career came around and I quit. Got bad out of shape and restarted last year. Could have kept my rank but wanted to start over from scratch to get my physical level to where it should be for my rank. Listen to your body and be realistic in you expectations, decided what you want: Self defense, flashy kicks to impress people, sparring and competition or just better health and start making your educated decisions.

No, 33 is a fine age. Just remember that you are not 20 when you get going with it!

Hi there!

The answer to your question is you're never too old.

I'm taking Jujitsu & Isshun ryu ((Both forms of Japanese martial arts)).

My sensei is I want to say.... 67? My other master is about 90. No joke! Although, he can't really perform the moves, he can explain them to us.

I'm 15, and have been taking it for about 5 years now. I don't think you're too late//old to start.

Its not too late just remember that starting out you will have more limitations then the younger guys . Stretching and endurance especially . However after a while you will become flexible and have a greater endurance . I think its a great idea .

I was 38 when I started. I am now a first degree black belt. Like someone said before me - remember you are not 20. Listen to the aches and pains. Good Luck

Its never too late. I started at 32( I'm now 39 and a shodan); and I never think of my age when it comes to training; except when I beat kids half my age- then I'm proud:)
If you want to do it, just do it.
