It's usually raw sewage but it can also be bacteria or algae. Technically the last two are not pollution.

A beach closed by pollution can be from ecoli that is from the birds flying overhead mainly seagulls and when they defecate (poop) it lands in the water and when they do this alot the beach gets shut down. Another reason is when we have heavy rains that cause flooding this releases the overflow of the sewer system into the lake or ocean....
