Just as Adam and Eve were not accountable until they knew the difference between good and evil, so is the same for children. A child is born into sin but their hearts are pure. Once they come to an age (whatever that may be, each child is different) where they know the difference between good and evil (Have knowledge of it) Then they need to make a choice.

The Catholic Tradition is that children cannot know the difference between right and wrong until the age of reason. This is given to be seven years old. Hence this is the age when parents are encouraged to bring their children forward for First Holy Communion and Reconcilliation preperation.

The ancient people who wrote the Bible had no idea that civilization would advance to the point where a question like that would even be considered. Religion always hides the mentality of the people who wrote the Bible. They thought that the Earth was flat and if you got to close to the edge you would fall off.

You are asking about what's known in some circles as the "age of reason", the age a child becomes accountable for his/her sins.
The closest thing I've seen in the Bible to give credence to an "age of reason" is this: when the children of Israel, because of unbelief, lost their chance to go into Canaan and instead had to wander in the desert for 40 years, God told them this:
Numbers 14 (NIV)
26 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: 27 "How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. 28 So tell them, 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very things I heard you say: 29 In this desert your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected. 32 But you—your bodies will fall in this desert. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the desert."
So, according this, the age of accountability for one's sins is 20.

Hi Steven,
I have learned that we are born in sin and must be taught to do the right things. Just watch a toddler, say "don't touch that, it is hot!"... What do they do? They reach right out and touch it...huh?
We all miss the mark. In archery, "sin" is missing the bulls eye. Really...Look it up. I know I hardly ever hit the bulls eye.

The age of reason does not need the assistance of God's revelation in the Sacred Scriptures for God has equipped our minds with a natural faculty for knowing it.

They do. Although I am not a Christian, My Christian friends tell me that God would not allow babies or toddlers to go to hell since they are incapable of learning about Jesus and understanding sin. I do not know the range of this age however.
