I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. What I did is replace the factory exhaust with an edelbrock sdt muffler, I installed a jet performance stage 1 computer module and an air raid jr intake system. I replaced the original champions with autolite double platinums. I get 26 mpg on the freeway and about 21-22 in the city. As far as acceleration goes, it's a little more responsive on the high end and a little quicker while passing. I did it primarily for fuel efficiency.
The Jeep 4.7L V8 does not have a distributor cap and rotor or ignition wires. It's a distributorless ignition system and all functions on the ignition timing are controlled by the PCM. You don't want to be fooled into buying an entire cat back exhaust system. All they will do is make your engine surge and pulsate when near other cars with loud exhausts. This gets pretty annoying after a while. Not to mentiion the money that you save by just replacing the muffler. Do the air raid intake system because it's only $125 when compared to $260-$310 from a knn and a volant cold air system. The jet performance chip is the only one that is actually made for Dodge, Jeep 4.7L V8s. Hope this helps you in any way.

There's a few things if you want to do small mods:
The main two for better air flow is to install a K&N cold filter air filteration system instead of the stock. Also, a better exhaust pipe configuration with better mufflers allow the engine to breath better too.
Fuel improvement like using premium might help a little, but most people don't like the cost issue. A super charger added on will definately increase your horses, but at a steep price, unless you can install it yourself, and it's gotta fit under that Jeep hood, otherwise....and on a new hood to the bill.
There are reputable companies like JEGS sell sport tuning modules that hook into your car's CPU and mount to the dash, you mopar guys seem to love them. It has virtural gages to see your bhp, torque, 0 to 60 times, 1/4 mile time to see if your improving with their "performance" settings. They allow you to take off the stock settings to fine tune your automobile, and they are able to be reset to the stock settings and removed. Be careful in what you buy. I'm not too fond of just the straight chips though, most of those are scams (10 cent resistors at radio shack) and you want to be careful about ruining your engine. Buy something quality, not an ebay scam.
The main suggestion I'd also like to mention, without all the mods, is a simple tune up. Dirty air filters, fouled plugs, bad timing, bad wires and dirty fuel injectors all rob bhp. You should go with premium plantium or iridium plugs, gapped properly with a good wire set, like bosch. Many cars need the timing done professional nowadays with the CPU's on the car, mine does, which means I can't do it myself. I recommend adding Lucas' products especially for fuel injector cleaning but also for your oils. I have a big V8 and it sure helped to blow out the built up carbon deposits. You also might want to check the PCV and EGR valves and the fuel filter. Most of those are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.
Jeeps are great handling and have a smooth acceleration and wrote the book on off-roading, but I've not seen too many speedster versions. My buddy's got the new one with the Hemi and it takes off really well, but when he had the older one, there was always a lag in the acceleration. If you have 4x4 on demand, turn it off, the 4X4 robs bhp while it gives you the handling in bad traction.
One last thing, when I got the v8 that I have now, I replaced the EGR, put premium and lucas fuel injector in it and took it on the freeway and blew out the carbon with some freeway HARD accelerations at a starting point of about 70mph (when nobody is around...for safety). I still have to do this once in a while but it works when I drive in the city it's better. Seems like v8's need this more for some reason. I don't know why, but it works.

see if you can get the tranny worked up or if you can get a turbo booster for it I have a wagoneer with a 6 cylinder and you can get a turbo charger for a six cylinder, look it up and see what happens

bigger throttle body bigger exhaust and a power chip in computer.. more air in more air out and more fuel and better programing. that is a start.
