I have had people say it and seen it on the news about chews and dogs . Some people think that rawhide chews are not good for dogs. My Black Lab stays in the apartment all day and they keep her occupied. I have never had a problem with her and chews but some people say they are bad.

Although expensive, the absolute safest choice for any kind of chewer is bully sticks. They are dried, all-natural bull steers(penises...sorry for the TMI). They are totally safe and dogs love them! If you buy them in bulk, say the 12" sticks, one 12" stick can last one moderate chewer two days!

These two sites sell the best bully sticks in my opinion. My dogs all love them, and they are very long-lasting. Did I mention they are the healthiest choice out there?

it's not that the chews are bad for dogs, it's just that some dogs do not chew there food/treats very well and if that is the case ,w/ a rawhide chew it will get logged somewhere and it will begin to swell up from asborton from body fluids and the end result is not nice- you need to make sure yr dog fully chews those before you ever leave it alone-and still i would advise you be around, animals are funny-you never know. there are lots of tough chew toys you can get, even some to hide treats in-i use those for my german shepard-i would not leave yr dog alone w/a chewy,my opinion......

There were some problems with a product called "greenies". They have been redeveloped so that the product is safe. However, any dog COULD have a problem with a chew - like rawhide, greenie etc. It's best to give them one when you are at home, so if there is a problem, you will be there to help.

I have used the big black tough kong toys filled with treats. Your lab woudl need the hard one as they can really chew stuff. The Kong toys keep them busy trying to get the treats out. You can fill them will healthy safe treats.

Dogs can choke on rawhide, and being unsupervised.... you might not come home to a good scene.

I don't give our dogs rawhide. I was told (several years ago) that dogs don't digest it very well or very quickly and can just lay in their stomach. Because it's dried "something", it can absorb digestive fluids and swell.

This is only what I was told. I do not know of any scientific or medical proof of it. I just don't take the chances.

Rawhides can be full of chemicals that can be harmful to your dog. They are also not very digestable, and can cause blockages if eaten in large quantities.

I'd recommend going with a treat filled Kong, or large raw beef knuckle bones instead.

Wel my dog eats rawhide all the time and nothing happened to her but if you are worried about it then when the bone is getting small take it away from her and give her a new one.

I've given my dog rawhides all her life, as long as the dog actually chews it up and doesn't try to swallow whole chuncks it should be fine.

I have heard of many incidents of dogs choking on rawhides. I personally would never give my dog rawhides.
