computer software was created to run/interact/use computer hardware

without software, the computers hardware (CPU, video card, ect) would not know how to function

windows (an operating system, but still being software) communicates with all the hardware for the software, and through windows, other software can then communicate with the hardware
you NEED software to be able to give instructions to the computer hardware (for example, draw this on the screen here)
