That behaviour is called instinct. That's what cats do. They hunt. Put your bird in a safe place where the cat cannot get to it. Don't know what you mean by discipline, but you cat will not learn to stop hunting birds because it is part of what make him/her a kitty.

Keeping the bird out of the cats sight is probably the best solution.
I had a parakeet for at least 5 or 6 years before I moved away and got married. Went to live in Hawaii so had to leave Brandi with Mom and Dad.
I was gone about a year and a half and came back for Christmas with my cat. My cat was amazed with that bird. We always tried to keep the door shut where she was so that my cat would leave her alone.
We came home one day and found the door open, the birdcage in the floor, the bird dead. I was so upset. But, it's natural for cats to be amazed by birds. My cat did not directly kill my parakeet. He never even touched her. I think she probably died of a heart attack or just being scared to death.
I truly don't believe that you can make a cat leave a bird alone. I don't believe my cat meant any harm. It was just something different and moving.

A cats natural prey is birds. He will not learn. Hide the bird or put him in a very safe place. Like a ceiling that you can reach but not the cat

There is no way you're going to teach the cat not to want to get at the bird. Hide the bird.

don't punish the cat. He's only doing what he knows how to do. keep the bird away from the cat. you can punish a learned behaviour but you can't take away something that's instinct!

This one is easy. Kill the bird or get rid of it. Cats are better companions anyway.

Your cat is simply being a cat! "Disciplining" him will not change that. (that rhymes, too).
Hide the bird.
