I agree wholeheartedly with Another Garcia's answer... I can definitely relate to the background. I worked my *** off while everyone else partied... can't say it didn't taint my experience, but I have advanced further now than most people twice my age. Even with grants, loans and schiolarships (which can cut your cost a LOT), trying to pay your own way on minimum wage jobs sucks.

A few things to seriously consider:
-Teach for America (covers your tutition costs in exchange for service as ateacher in a poor region)
-Applying for an internship in your field of study; especially if it is science. In order to retain good scientists, many organizations pay at least partial tuition
-college work study; a good friend of mine paid her way through school by being the school janitor in the dorms.

Serious answer here so don't sweat it. When I was in highschool I didn't think twice about going - I knew in my heart I couldn't afford it. I came from a single parent home where my mother was a factory worker who made minimum wage her whole life. I was out of high school for a year when I ran into a college professor who thought I was an idiot. He convinced me to go down to my community college (though any state school you are a resident of will apply as well) to apply and speak to financial aid. Needless to say, the govt paid for all my classes, books, and related expenses. Between my financial aid and jobs I took in the school to supplement my income I bought a car, a computer, a (now famous) leather sofa - etc. . . . The money is out there - you just have to show it you want it. Good luck.

Have you tried contacting the local Workforce Development program in your area ? They will pay for tuition and college in order to train or retrain you in a field in order to become gainfully employed. I don't know what all of their conditions are, but I believe that you have to show a financial need, and also either be layed off, a displaced homemaker, or out of the workforce for sometime. Also, a single parent household is eligible.
Some conditions that would fit into getting trained in another field would also include working in a low paying job. It's worth getting the info and you don't have to take it if you don't want to.
They usually pay for any programs at a two year college or tech school.

Have you completed a Federal Financial Aid Application? Generally, that will cover the cost of tutition and books at local or state college. You may be egilible for grants or at minimum a loan (with payments beginning about 6 months after you graduate or leave college). For anything that Federal grants or loans doesn't cover, I would suggest that you get a part-time job.

do you live in the United States? If so apply for a grant if you don't qualify for that then you can try to apply for a student loan, work for a company who will pay tuition rembursement, get a part time job etc.

if you really want to go to college there are ways unfortunately with the price of college I don't think you will get a free hand out.

Try financial aid. Some banks also give personal loans to college students that you don't have to pay back till you're done.

Go to your college financial aid office. They will give you paperwork for grants, loans and scholarships. You should have no trouble getting financial aid. These days the more poor you are..the more money available to you if you just apply for it.

Forget College! Decide what it is you want to do and go into the workforce and work your way up.

You'll save 4 years of your life and a crapload of dollars.
