i have a pain mainly at the jaw joint but it begins to hurt under my jaw. it doesn't hurt in the morning, and is worse in the evening. is it still possible that it's lockjaw, or is lockjaw a constant feeling?

STRESS! You are grinding your teeth at night or clenching your teeth during the day, or both. Try not clamping your mouth shut. Practice keeping your mouth slightly open all the time. You will find the stress doesn't land in your jaw and your pain will go away. You'll be shocked how well it works.

I do not think you have lockjaw...if you have had a tetanus shot in the last 7 years you are safe. Lockjaw presents other problems, too. (Have you stepped on a rusty metal object or had your skin punctured by something rusty?) I doubt you have lockjaw, so relax. Your jaw would not open at all. Are you getting your wisdom teeth? or are gnashing (grinding) your teeth? The tempo-mandibular joint which is located by the side of your head/by your ear.(.where the maxilla and the mandible meet) sometimes becomes swollen and painful when you grind your teeth (also called bruxism) due to stress (most people do this at night while they sleep. Upon waking....this joint is painful, so I wonder then if you are getting your wisdom teeth You did not state your age so I do not know if that it is possible.... but,if this persists see a dentist to be sure.

Can Stress Cause Lockjaw

You don't have lockjaw. Lockjaw is Tetanus and your symptoms would be rather more severe. Also, you've probably been vaccinated for Tetanus.

I think you should ask your dental professional. The first thing that comes to mind is TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint) disease and I believe that this can be related to stress. That said, you should see someone about this. These problems can be treated. There really is no reason for you to go around in pain, being miserable, when the problem could be addressed.

Good luck.

You don't have Lockjaw.
I know what you have is TMJ and/or teeth grinding.
I have both condtions; it will make your jaw hurt and feel tight, you cannot open your mouth wide, and you will hear clicking and popping noises when you open your mouth wide.
TMJ can also cause headaches and muscle spasms in your neck, shoulders and back.
You need to either get a Sleep-Rite nightguard, which you can order online for about $65.00 or have your dentist make a custom fitted guard to wear at night, which is much more expensive. I have the Sleep-Rite guard and it works very well for tooth grinding and will also help the TMJ.
Stress makes TMJ worse, so try to avoid it.
I listen to a progressive muscle relaxtion technique every night before going to sleep, which I have found helps a lot.
Go to a chiropractor and/or a massage therapist that specialize in TMJ; I go to mt once every 2 weeks...this has helped my TMJ considerably. You really should get a night guard, as grinding your teeth can wear them down and damage them and will throw your bite off, which can make the TMJ even worse.

This is not lockjaw; it is most probably something to do with the TMJ, or jaw joint. Most people don't have symptoms in the a.m. but as the day progresses it becomes more of a discomfort. You can also have headaches associated with the same. You need to find a progressive DDS who specializes in treating TMJ disorders for an evaluation. The DDS may put you in some type of appliance you wear either at night or sometimes, for a short period of time, during the day. I wear one when I sleep; if I don't I have discomfort in both joints, headaches, clicking in my joints, etc. By the way, I am in the dental profession so I am familiar with this type of problem.

Lockjaw is the same thing as Tetanus. It is a disease that would be extremely painful and very lethal and would have you in the ER in excrutiating pain.
You could have something going on with your teeth or something like TMJ. Sometimes an ear infection can be felt in the jaw. See your doctor about it.

i do not think that it is lock jaw. with lock jaw it does not come and go. What are you doing during the day that you are clenching about. I developed lock jaw many years ago after i had my wisdom teeth removed un properly. it was the worse pain. it took alot of medication to get me back on track. Have you recently had a jar to your jaw. you may have the start of a TMJ. If it doesn't get better see your Dentist. you can also try taking 500 ml of Advil it should relax the muscles in the Jaw.

yes but you can see a massage therapist and this person can utilize pressure points in the face to aleiviate some of your pain, also a cold compress could help. Try putting on relaxing music to sleep to so that your not clenching or grinding your teeth at night.
