I just found out my puppy has roundworms and before i go to the vet i wanted to know if their was something i could do at home instead of having to go to the vets and spend more money than i might actually have to. I also wanted to know what is the worst thing that can happen to a puppy with roundworms? what will happen if i can't get him treated right away? can he die? will he get really sick? or will he be fine and just need some medicine?

any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Roundworms are very common in puppies. It is important that you get him treated because he can get very sick if you leave it for too long. Roundworms can also be transmitted to people. It is usually children who play in infected dirt and ingest the eggs. Roundworms can travel just about anywhere in the body and cause problems. Several hundred children go blind each year because of roundworm infections. There are no over the counter treatments that work well and it usually takes more than one treatment to get rid of all the parasites. By keeping your dog on a monthly heartworm preventative such as heartgard, interceptor or sentinel you will be deworming him each month for intestinal parasites as well. If he has had a recent puppy exam and is up to date on his shots, your vet will probably be ok prescribing medicine without another exam or he may require that you bring in a fecal sample for testing to be sure it is roundworms. Otherwise he needs to be checked out anyway. Good luck- with proper treatment he'll be worm free in no time.

He could very well die. How much time you have to treat them depends on the size of your puppy and the severity of it's infestation. Pretty much all puppies get roundworms, but you need to take the dog to the vet to make sure it doesn't have any other parasites as well as roundworm. The de-wormers they use are the best you can get. You can buy de-wormer at the pet store too, but it's not as effective. If you didn't want to spend money on vet bills you shouldn't have gotten a puppy. Puppies are expensive because they need to be wormed and get 3 rounds of shots if you want them to be healthy. Plus you should have them on heart worm preventative.

A puppy can die from a roundworm infestation. They literally will drain the blood out of a dog if left untreated. You can try taking a stool sample to your vet and maybe they will give you some wormer for it. You can buy stuff from Walmart and the pet stores but they are not very good. You need to get the good stuff from the vet.

Roundworms (which are stringy and long) are probably the most common puppy worms. Most breeders worm for roundworms every 2 weeks from the time the pups are born because roundworms can be passed from the mother to the pups and they are so common in litters. Roundworms are NOT an emergency, but they need to be treated in a timely manner. You may notice diarrhea and a possible weight loss or no weight gain. It isn't usual for a puppy to vomit up roundworms. That is pretty disgusting because they are often still moving. All worms are parasites and feed off of the host (your puppy). There are many worms that, in my opinion, much worse than roundworms. At least roundworms are not contagious to humans as whip worms and some others are. Parasites is one of the best reason for picking up your pups poop, children won't step on it barefoot and other dogs won't walk in it. If you really don't have much money, I think you can buy meds for round worms from a horse feed store. Good luck with your pup.

Roundworms won't kill him today or anything but they absolutely can make him very sick or even kill him if left untreated. If you have a regular vet, they will probably let you take a stool sample in and then give you some meds so you wouldn't even have to pay an exam fee to take your dog in. It's not really that expensive but you do need to get him to the vet soon. Hope this helps.

Yes, your puppy can get very sick. Roundworms or any kind of worms can kill a puppy. He probably has more than one kind of worms. The vet can test for all the different kinds and cure him of them all in one trip. You have to be ready to go a vet if you have a puppy or dog. It's sort of like having a kid. They only have you to depend on to take care of them.

Any type of parasite can carry disease and deprive the dog of nutrition. Your dog's life is not worth the risk, spend the money. The cost of a vet should be considered before even getting a pet. Why make the puppy suffer? If you are concerned about cost try a lcoal animal shelter veternarian. Sometimes they provide low cost services.

Worse thing..infect others than die!

Get the pup on treatment right away. If you can't afford it or won't find a rescue group or forever home for the dog that will, and than.. don't get another living pet again until you're willing and able to pay for the things the dog needs.

You MUST take him to the vet. OTC dewormers are usually useless and might even make your dog ill, and there are no home remedies for worms. And yes, if you don't treat them, your dog will get very ill and eventually die. Get him to a vet ASAP and get him dewormed. The longer you wait, the worse it will be- he'll start losing weight rapidly and it will make it harder for him to recover, and it could make him prone to other illnesses.
