He's two years old and healthy otherwise. It's like the bottoms of his ears are crusty. Is this due to dry skin or what? It's only on the lower part of his ears and they do not drag on the ground. Thanks for any help.

He isn't getting bitten by flies or mites. Is he allergic to anything-shampoo? It could be like an eczema or something like dandruff.
Have you asked your vet about his condition? Is there loss of hair?
What about using vet ointment or balm?

FYI everyone -- Fly strike is something that can be very serious to dogs ear. The flies actually attack and bit the ears or other sensitive places. It leaves black tiny scabs that when washed turn the color of blood like flea debris when shampooed This does not sound like Fly strike because of the color.
Fly strike can happen because of where you live, an unclean yard, the type of flies you have in the area and the season.
I have had a serious problem in the past with this and have found that the spray repellent sold is good but regular human insect repellent also worked for my dog.
If not treated Fly strike can cause blood clots and serious infections. It sometimes isn't that obvious what it is.
It usually happens in the summer of fall.

Do you feed him canned food? It's possibly just dried food!

Does he spend his days outside? another common problem is that flies love to bite on the ends of dogs ears to either suck blood or drink the sweat. (gross, huh?) of course, this is really irritating to the dogs skin.

If neither one of these sounds right, then he has some kind of skin condition and he should go to the vet.

does your dog spend a lot of time outside? sometimes flies actually eat away at the ear and cause it to look like that.

Ear mites, maybe? Scabbing skin isn't good either, consult your vet.
