BluRay is a new type of DVD that is recorded high definition (1080p). Standard DVD movies are recorded in enhanced definition (720x480 or 480p).
If you wanted to try BluRay, you would need to purchase a BluRay DVD Player, which costs around $1000. Yes, $1000, which is 10 times more than the average DVD player.
If you are thinking of getting it, I would wait. BluRay is one of two high definition DVD standards. The other being HD-DVD. The format war begun this summer and it will settle down next year. The prices of these DVD players are insane too.

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data.
It gets it's name from the blue laser it uses to read the information on the disk.
Blu-Ray is in a format war with rival HD DVD, which is backed by Toshiba, Sanyo and NEC and has support from Intel and Microsoft. (My guess is that Microsoft supports HD because Blu-Ray enjoys Apples support and runs on Java software by Sun Microsystems) Blu-Ray has greater capabilities and capacity but is slower to market and more expensive. Everything is up in the air so I would wait unless you are a movie fanatic and have a TV that can take advantage of the greater picture quality. (an HDTV with an HDMI input-preferably 1080P). Even then not all movies will be available as some studios are only releasing on HD DVD

I would like to back up Miguel in that Blu Ray is a disc format, not a movie format. You can store whatever you want to on Blu Ray discs if you have a burner.
