Hi there, I am at a loss because I am taking prevacid twice a day and my GERD symptoms are not getting cured, even getting worse at times! I am thin, young, and stay away from the trigger foods...Has anyone been told to take prevacid (or any other acid suppression medication) more than twice a day? I heard that in hyper cases this might be necessary...I am just running out of ideas to try to cure this damn thing!

Yes--I was Dx'd with GERD and hit the hospital for 12 days with severe repiratory problems. They gave me a lot of Predisone and Protonix--and was on oxygen for days before they did a procedure--VACUMMED out my lungs! My pulmonary, specialist, I think, was the most helpful to prevent recurrence--as he said to raise the head of my bed--to experiment how high--and a 4" incline solved the problem! He said GERD came up my esophogus at night and the acid leaked into my lungs--somehow...?? I have little idea of actualy physiological workings--but I DID put a concrete block under the head of my bed and took Tums after meals--even tho' I rarely eat much--and before bed. Now I rarely need Tums; sleep soundly and have been in good health since last year!

Good Luck!!

Prevacid is used to treat certain stomach problems and esophagus (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid secreted by the stomach. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus.

My husband takes two Nexium pills a day and it seems to help a bit more than one a day....also has prilosec OTC if necessary and can take Maalox tablets if necessary....Most irritating at night when he reclines or goes to bed....Dr. feels it is acid reflux due to position. Next step may be carufate...(Spelling not sure?)..... or some sort of nitrate blocker to suppress stomach spasms that produce acids. (Has had medical tests done from end to end of the digestive tract and all is normal. All this started about 11 years ago when he had a heart attack and was put on some preventative maintenance meds temporarily at that time. He lost 50 pounds, maintains normal weight and exercises, and eats low fat and avoids the triggers too...he does have a demanding occupation that is stressful...so many factors can feed into this stomach distress....one thing I know...you are not alone in your stomach problems...Good luck......

I was in the same situation, I had tried all of those things too. My doctor put me on Zegerid 40mg twice a day and its working really well. The only thing is its quite expensive and the insurance may want to your doctor to get a pre-authorization.

Good luck!
