I'm not a a medical doctor, but I am sure you can damage your body by hard, incessant coughing. If you are coughing hard and long enough to wonder whether you are bruising your ribs, you need to get to a doctor right away to determine whether you might have bronchitis, a respiratory infection, or asthma. I damaged my singing voice by coughing too hard and too long, thinking I didn't need to see a doctor. I also know someone who broke some tiny blood vessels in her eyes from hard coughing. You won't want to be seen in public for a while if that happens to you!

Yes you certainly bruise and even crack your ribs when you cough. My mom cracked her ribs last spring and her doctor said it was from her coughing so much. She had Pneumonia at the time. Some people have bones that are not as strong as others especially the older people.

I have a friend who broke 2 of her ribs while coughing. She had bronchitis and coughed rather violently. The Dr said there was nothing they could do for her broken ribs--they would heal by themselves in approx 6 weeks. They used to wrap them but found out that caused people to get pneumonia as they couldn't fully expand their lungs when they breathed.

My sister broke a rib coughing (when she had bronchitis), so I suppose you probably can. If your rib hurts, I read somewhere that even pulling on the cartilage in the ribcage can be painful, which I assume can happen when you are coughing.

I have given myself green stem Fractures coughing. The best thing to do is contact your Doc. of your that bad. Over the counter products likes Muconex, and Tylenol cold are helpful. Or a good old fashioned vaporizer will work wonders. A simple answer is yes.

I don't think it's possible to "bruise" your ribs when you cough however, you may have inadvertently bumped or stressed your muscles in your chest which will cause severe to moderate pain when you do cough.

No, but you can strain and sometimes even tear the muscles along your rib cage if you cough hard and long enough.

Yes you can, in addition to pulling muscles and cracking ribs.
