My brother had this for a long time, and was feeling sick so often and had to cut out certain things from his diet.
Like him, you MAY have what is called a hiatal hernia, which means that the opening between the esophagus and the stomach may be staying open. My brother had a simple surgical procedure and no longer suffers from this. Ask your doctor if you may perhaps have a hiatal hernia.

Yes! I was also Dx'd with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary desease) and on Protonix. I had been on heavy doses of Predisone (steroids, I guess) in the hospital for 12 days and lost my memory! After I got out, I couldn't even figure out what people were saying to me!! Let alone try to answer them! I lost all sense of direction--even got lost trying to walk around the BLOCK!!! After neurologists' tests etc., they finally took me off Protonix and I started getting my memory back!!! I hadn't been able to drive or anything. Now, I still have no general sense of direction, but CAN read a map and get places!! THANK GOODNESS! I guess that stuff is life-saving, but some of it gives some of us weird s/e's!!!
The GERD is controlled by sleeping on an incline of my bed--I've found that only 4" does it for me; Tums after I eat and before bed. It's important that it is controlled, as I've read that it can lead to deterioration of the esophegus (the acid of the digestive fluids).
Good Luck!!

CALL YOUR DOCTOR!!! There are other medications for GERD which work much better than Protonix. A lot of doctors write prescriptions for it and insurance companies like it because it is cheap (because it doesn't work!!!) Ask your doc for Prevacid or Nexium. Even over the counter Prilosec works better than Protonix. Your pain should have subsided within a couple of days at the longest.

you may want to check back with your MD as protonix may not work for you...there are other meds out there that may work better. other suggestions (mu hubby has gerd) elevate the head of your bed on 4-6 inch blocks, do not eat 4 hours before you go to bed, find out which foods aggravate you more and avoid them!! it may take 3 weeks to "calm things down" nexium and gaviscon work best for hubby-and this was thru trail and error.

Check with your doctor, to see if they can give you something else. There may be more to having just GERD, and Heart burn. Be careful taking alot of malox, as you may not notice it, has alot of magnesiam in it, and cause more harm to you, in the long run.
